Q-Tip the professor.

Q-Tip is a revered hip-hop figure for a multitude of reasons. Aside from his foundational presence in one of music’s greatest groups ever, A Tribe Called Quest, Q has been, and continue to be, an architect of hip-hop–both directly and indirectly. His tangible contributions are obvious; go listen to any ATCQ album to appreciate his supreme artistry. But recently, he took those contributions one step further with an incredible announcement.

Q will be teaching jazz and hip-hop classes at NYU this coming fall. Part of NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, Q-Tip will be teaching students about the connection between jazz and hip-hop, using his own experience as a guiding hand. Students aren’t the only ones who are excited.

Jason King, associate professor and director of Writing, History & Emergent Media Studies at the Clive Davis Institute, “That’s why we’re so excited to welcome Q-Tip, since he’s a peerless icon who redefined hip-hop for generations to come and brought jazz to the genre, especially through his contribution with A Tribe Called Quest. He also has a natural instinct for teaching and cultivating excellence in students in terms of their focus on craft and expressive style. It’s going to be transformative to have him on board.”

Where was this opportunity when I was in college?
