E-40 is still out here killing it.

Bay Area’s E-40 is a Hip Hop rarity. A genre typically reserved for young men with nothing to lose, the 49-year-old rapper defies this conventional Hip Hop trope through consistent output and wise strategy.

E-40 constantly positions himself advantageously through either hopping on the right artist’s track, or recruiting the proper talent to remain relevant. He was featured on ScHoolboy Q’s “Dope Dealer” off his 2016 critically acclaimed Blank Face LP album, and most recently, he recruited Yo Gotti and exploding emcee, YoungBoy NBA, for his newest track, “Straight Out The Dirt”.

Spitting over a trap-heavy J Peezy production, E-40 enlists his conventional flow, which is anything but conventional for Hip Hop—his distinct voice and rhyme scheme can be blindly picked out of a police line-up. The Bay Area spitter and his cohorts discuss their remarkable ascension from the streets, or the dirt, to the glamorous life they’d always envisioned while stranded in poverty. Getting artistic perspectives from different regions—E-40 is from Oakland, Gotti is from Memphis, and YoungBoy hails from Baton Rouge—further validate the song’s message of grinding endlessly towards success; the hustle knows no boundaries.
