A cut from DZA and Benny’s upcoming EP, Statue of Limitations.

While regional hip-hop sounds have lessened with the advent of the internet and social media, there remain intrepid MCs who embody their city’s musical roots. Benny The Butcher and Smoke DZA confidently stand in that rare camp, serving gritty, descriptive, and lyrical content across their decorated catalogues. Recently, the two linked on “Drug Rap” — the first taste of their collaborative EP, Statue of Limitations.

As if their dual presence and content wasn’t “New York” enough, “Drug Rap” is produced by the legendary Pete Rock, who linked with DZA for their 2016 joint album, Don’t Smoke Rock. Steeped in a nostalgic sound, “Drug Rap” oozes Big Apple vibes, as the chilling instrumental structures DZA and Benny’s vivid lyrical onslaught of drug-related anecdotes.

DZA and Benny’s stylistically disparate vocal approaches — the former has a smoother touch while the latter has a rough edge — coalesce to paint an evocative image of NY’s unforgiving drug scene.

Statue of Limitations is expected to arrive this Friday, October 18th. Get ready for its release by peeping “Drug Rap” below:
