Hot! J. Cole Makes Good on First 2019 Single, “Middle Child”

It’s going to be a good year for Cole.

As announced earlier this week, J. Cole has made good on his promise to deliver his new “Middle Child” single last night, promptly at 9pm.

Produced by T-Minus, “Middle Child” begins what’s expected to be an auspicious year for J. Cole, who recently announced the completion of his and Dreamville’s ensemble release, Revenge of The Dreamers III, which will feature an eclectic mix of some of today’s brightest musical minds. No one is quite sure if “Middle Child” is the direct precursor to a solo Cole album, but, if anything, it serves as an indelible a la carte offering.

Making a deliberate decision to change up his style, “Middle Child” finds Cole playfully experimenting with a new flow–one that finds him sauntering across the T-Minus production, perpetually flirting with falling out of pocket but waking up just in time to perfectly hit the layered instrumental. It is a rich performance from J that furthers his big brother rhetoric and self-assumed industry role–whether it’s wanting to directly or implicitly help misunderstood artists, like Kodak Black, or offering his perspective on the double-edged sword of drug addiction.

“Middle Child” arouses excitement for what Cole has in store for the remainder of a very young 2019. Knowing J, this is only an abridged preview into what’s to come.
