Performing four cuts off Bandana.

Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, collectively known as MadGibbs, struck gold with their second collaborative LP, Bandana, released on June 28th. The two have now taken the larger than life project to the small stage, as they’re the most recent guests of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.

An album filled with gems, Freddie and Malib parsed through the esteemed tracklist to select four songs for their tiny performance: “Education,” “Gat Damn,” “Soul Right,” and “Freestyle Shit.”

With some lush production, courtesy of Madlib and the in-house band, Freddie thrives in the intimate acoustic environment. A distinguished voice that packs a punch, the Baby Face Killa rapper satisfying contrasts with the textured soundscape, a coalescence of pianos, horns, strings, and drums, to impart a unique and engaging concert.

Not everyone’s vocals translate to such a raw musical setting. Freddie’s does more than translate — it sticks the landing.
