At its purest form, art is meant to evoke an emotional response while creating rousing conversation. In divisive times, art can be a necessary weapon to combat the powers that be; it can cut through the clutter more effectively than a shout or a fist. For hip-hop, that art has largely materialized as some form of protest music, fighting the systemic chastising forces that have plagued minorities since America’s dawn.
