off, can you give Heads some background as to who you are?
I go by the name of SPK a.k.a. SP.Killa, Lefrak/Corona Queens native, inhouse
producer for Thugged Out Militainment since 1998
What equipment do you use?
I'm always exploring new gear, but my all time favorite gears are The ASR 10
& The MPC 2000XL, those 2 machines right there played a big part in my music
career, but i also work with the Triton, Fantom, and Motif keyboard. I Record
and Mix on ProTools and The Roland 1680.
How did you start making beats?
I started making beats soon after I became a local DJ in my hood back in the
mid 90's , I started looping pieces of music on a gemini mixer with a 6 seconds
sampler and i started remixing acapella joints with my own beats to feature
them on my own mixtapes. Soon after that I fell in love with Hip Hop Production
and became a full time producer and I Never stopped making beats ever since.
How has your styles changed and evolved from when you started until now? it
has changed from this simple talented hip hop producer from around the way to
this now hip hop producer whose music has been heard in many different places
around the world> so in order for me to stand out in this music competition
I had to step my game up so that I can play along with others producers in the
major leagues. I feel much more mature in the music now, I got more music knowledge
now which makes it easier for me to make music.
You've done work with a lot of superstars, who are your favorites to
So far I had a good time with every artist that I have worked with, But I think
2 of my favorites would be NORE and Willie Stubz, because Im always in the studio
with them I feel very attached to them music wise and vice versa, and thats
why I always end up having a few joints on each of their solo albums.
What's it like being in a studio session with NORE?
It's like beeing in a session with a real fun and talented dude with a good
sense of humor and a very creative brain. He makes sure everybody in the lab
is having a good time while we make music in the studio... and can't forget
the non stop blunts back2back, we stay smoking that good shit in the studio
to keep our flow going.... Now I gotta take a pause to lite one up!.
You and Willie Stubz got some crazy tracks, how did you guys meet and
what's your recording process like?
We were from around the same way, we met back like in '95 thru a friend of ours.,
we helped each other out with the music and kinda became like a guru and primo
type of duo, we've been thru deals and types of bulshit in this industry and
we're still here doing music together just like we always wanted. When i'm in
the studio with stubz we go straight to work and create a whole new song on
the spot or we might just play around with something just to see how it sounds.
oh, and cant forget the blunts also in this recording process.
How do you feel about the amount of producers in the game now and the
quality of the music?
I respect alotta producers out there doing it right now, i dont mind the amount,
to me is just a sign that hip hop is growing bigger,, alotta of good quality
hip hop is beeing released, but for some reason some are getting repetitive
with their sounds, and sound like they wanna stretch one hit into 5 mores, these
dudes got to be more creative if not they will get people tired of their same
sounds. Then they will wonder why people dont look for them no more.
If you could work with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
I think it would be Garth Brooks if anything just because this dude be selling
over 10 million copies like nothin, I can get a nice phat check outta that one.
But all jokes aside i think i would like to work with Metallica because i've
always been a fan of their music, i think i can do a crazy banger with that
band!! Metallica holla at your boy!!
