First
off, can you give us a small introduction as to who you are? My name is Liris Crosse aka Black Barbie. I've been working as a fashion
model for the past 7 years and also made my presence known in the hip hop community
through my appearance in music videos, calendars and magazines. I was one of the
first to start putting voluptuous women on the map in the hip hop game!
You've
appeared in numerous videos, what's your favorite?
My favorite video to date was when I worked that infamous gold dress in Jay
Z's "Do It Again" video! The song was SICK and I got lots of play
in it. Plus the atmosphere for the video was less like work and more like a
big party.
Who's the
coolest hip hop artist you've worked with and why?
I would have to say Lloyd Banks and 50 Cent. I've known 50 for like 5 or 6 years
so he has the utmost respect for me and made sure whatever I needed on set was
supplied. I remember I wasn't feeling what the stylist was trying to put me
in and 50 told the stylist to chill and he'd pick out my outfit, he just wanted
me to be satisfied. Lloyd is a darling and I got to talk to him on some deep
stuff so it was just cool working with them.
How hard
is it to make the transition from modeling to acting?
Anything you want in life you have to work hard for. So to me, I know I have
the talent it's just a matter of finding the project that catapults me into
the next realm and it's about building relationships with the movers and shakers
in the film industry. My time will come!
You had
a steamy scene with Tyrese in Baby Boy, how easy was it to play that scene?
Well, it was a bit nerve-wrecking since it's all these people in the room watching
you do the scene but I wanted to show I was there to work so I just had to block
it out and turn up the sex appeal. Tyrese andI didn't practice the scenes together
beforehand because we wanted the scene to be as new and intense as the character's
first time kissing. But I like being the center of attention so after the first
take, it was very easy, haha!
What's
your kind of guy?
Sensitive yet strong, loves God and his family, hardworking, romantic, thoughtful
(remembers the little things), smart, Southern (I love the Southern gentlemen),
spontaneous, funny and loves to travel!
What's
in your CD player right now?
Donny Hathaway's Greatest Hits, Jill Scott's new album, Van Hunt, 50 Cent, R.
Kelly
Do you
have any advice for girls wanting to get into modeling?
Expect a lot of rejection, this industry is not for the weak. remember that
it's a business and conduct yourself as such. Think about how you can get longevity.
I read
that you got a lot of rejections because of your voluptuous shape, do you think
the standards have changed today, I mean we're all tired of seeing extra skinny
girls, we like curves!
I think it has changed some but it's still not a total change. If anyone has
been watching America's Next Top Model they can see how the judge Janice Dickinson
speaks about the full-figured girl. The industry kind of puts a glass ceiling
on how far a voluptuous woman can go in fashion but hopefully their ignorance
will change. But shout out to the hip hop community for being more accepting
of curvy women.
You started
without an agent, do you think an agent is absolutely necessary?
Well, I think these days you can do a lot without an agent up until an extent.
If you are your own agent, you have to be very creative and aggressive to get
in front of directors, editors and clients. You must do mailings, hustle and
find out about castings, crash sets. it can be done but an agent is always needed
to get to that next level.
What are
your latest/current and future projects?
I was the 1st inductee into the XXL Magazine's Eye Candy Hall of Fame for their
September issue. I'm also saluted in Black Men Magazine's 101 Most Beautiful
Women issue, on newsstands now. I'm the 1st model in hip hop to sell my own
T-shirts which are available through my newly launched site called www.LirisCrosse.com
or www.BeautyIsHerName.com
. They are HOT! Some people who have been rockin the shirts are- 50 Cent, DJ
Williams (Denver Broncos), Edjerrin James (Indianapolis Colts), AO (And 1),
Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets), The Real Big Tigger, Idris Elba (HBO's The
Wire), John Singleton, Just Blaze.
