FLAWLESS INTERVIEW BY BRIAN KAYSER
|
8/9/05
What's good
man?
Same old shit,
going hard. I'm working real hard right now.
Who is Flawless?
I came from the
bottom and I moved on. I could tell you everything but it'd be a book. If you
listen to the joint "That's What It Is" that basically explains my
story on what I had to go through. I'm from the 90's in East Flatbush. I'm right
in the middle of everything. I'm still in the hood, I'm still there. If you
don't think I'm there, or if you dudes want to try me, I wish you would. I'm
on 93rd and Rutland all day. Brooklyn stand up. Everybody's doing their thing
from Harlem, Bronx
but if y'all work at a restaurant, bring that plate
for me, I'm hungry!
Why should we
be checking for you right now?
I'm the new Brooklyn
right now. I'm the new look right now. Not even just Brooklyn, I'm taking all
over. I'm bringing something that ain't there. Everybody sounds the same and
everybody's killing. I really don't' see it. A lot of these niggas don't have
songs, they can't do songs. But doing songs, that's the least of my problems.
New York is
tough though, because everywhere you look someone's rhyming
what separates
you from the pack?
A lot of dudes
are getting deals and deserve it, but a lot of them don't. I'm going hard in
the streets and independently. The dudes that's supposed to be getting looks
ain't getting them. I've studied shit, a lot of these dudes ain't fans either.
I listen to everything that's out. And I don't just listen to New York either.
I see what everyone else is bringing and what they don't have. These songs I
got
I'm prepared. I'm ready to go, trust me.
How's your mixtape
"For Heaven's Sake" doing right now?
We're killing them
on the streets with it right now. There's 20-something songs on it, a few freestyles.
We're tearing up the streets with them, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx
we're killing
the whole Tri-State.
Rappers that
blaze DVD's and mixtapes always have that question about making songs
That's the problem.
A lot of these dudes can't make them. On my mixtape, there's more songs than
freestyles. We gave niggas a whole album with that mixtape.
And the Big
Mike co-sign is pretty big, how did that come about?
We got on a couple
of his mixtapes. I've been on like 15 of them straight. And it was just about
that time when I was like "Mike, I'm serious." I needed Big Mike on
this jumpoff. He knows what's good. He knows what real music really is.
How
has that co-sign helped you?
It's helping a
lot. Big Mike is more than a DJ, he's doing a lot. We saw him signing autographs.
DJ's don't be signing autographs! It was inevitable that this happen. That's
the hottest DJ and I'm the hottest unsigned rapper. Big Mike has to grab the
streets, and by capturing the streets, you have to grab one of the hottest dudes
that's up-and-coming.
What's the next
move after this "For Heaven's Sake" runs its course?
I'm going to keep
flooding them. After the next mixtape, everyone should come knocking. If they
don't, I don't know what's wrong with them. After the next mixtape, we should
have that deal unless they do it now. But we're working on the next mixtape,
and after that, we should have that deal.
Everyone says
that want that "deal"
what are you looking for?
I ain't looking
for nothing too tragic. There's a lot of tragic deals out there that hurt you
before you even drop something. I'm looking for something that I deserve. Something
that I can hear and I can say "all right, that's reasonable." We've
got our own little label that we're running with.
AG (manager):
It's all about finding a good home. Everyone always wants that big check up
front, but it's not always about that. The more money you get up front, the
more money you owe at the end. It's all about finding a label that will put
you in the forefront and put the machine behind you. Shit, Nelly didn't get
anything crazy and he sold 8 million records. Plus we can make a hit record
with any producer.
What labels
are showing interest now?
We ain't really
jumping on them right now. We ain't really go fishing yet. We're trying to make
them come at us. I've been in a couple meetings before, but certain dudes up
there, they say what they want to say but they can't do anything. Just show
and prove, that's what we're doing.
What do you
want to say to your fans?
Listen to that
music, listen to it. Understand it, and I'm going to keep bringing more. my
number's on the mixtape, I'm getting calls from all over the world. This ain't
no Mike Jones shit where it goes straight to voicemail. I'm getting calls from
all over the world. 347.392.6704. Hit me and y'all niggas look out for me. Just
hit me and that's that. I'm doing my thing right now, everybody else do your
thing. I ain't mad at that, but I'm here now too. Don't be stingy y'all, we
here! And don't just listen to the beats, understand my story.
