Rest in Peace to
Proof. That really sucks what happened. It's sad that he lost his life and it's
sad that another man is on life support. The worst part about this whole situation
is that from the details coming in, it sounds as though everything could have
been avoided. Most Hip Hop deaths could have been avoided there's really
not a whole lot to say right now except that this situation sucks. HHG sends
our condolences to Proof's family and the entire Shady camp.
(moment of silence)
Scott Storch is starting a record label. Just what we really need, another record
label. Scott Storch is a genius on the beats, but it's looking like he's got
some work to do in the A&R department. His first signing: Brooke Hogan.
Was Macho Man Randy Savage's daughter taken? Where's the Undertaker? Didn't
he have a son? The Rock wasn't cool enough? Scott better keep those glasses
on when he's in the studio sessions and not look at the Hulkette or else the
Hulk will probably do one of those elbow-drops off the Mac hard-drive and follow
it up by cracking an MPC over Scott's head. Shoot, Hulk will probably do that
anyway if he doesn't double her vocals the way he wants it to sound And
the Storchaveli name's got to go. Something that sounds more like a wack mixtape
than a label is probably not the best name for your company I thought it
was bad when Scott Storch called Paris Hilton an incredible artist. Apparently
money talks.
I know a lot of
people are surprised that Papoose is not signed. I'm not really that surprised
right now. I'm sure Kay Slay is holding out for a monster deal. I mean, he's
pretty much went all out for this kid for two years now and all people still
know him for is his freestyles. The Swizz/Busta collab is decent, but it's not
like his freestyles. His fans love his freestyles. The fact that after all the
mixtapes of hard shit, they drop a single for the ladies just shows how little
respect true fans of artists get. Think about the shit. Look at what 50 did.
He got the support of the streets with his mixtapes and early material like
"How to Rob." Then as hits with pretty much non-stop girl songs ever
since. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it because everyone needs
to get money, but I guess that Papoose single just caught me off guard. The
thing with Papoose is that young guys love him. At the high school I'm in, every
guy loves Papoose. The girls don't know who Papoose is for the most part, and
I'm pretty sure they don't care. And to all the ladies that take offense at
that, I'm speaking from one experience. I'm not sexist, but isn't your oven
timer beeping?
You know what shit
really gets me? When artists say, "My fans don't understand that I'm an
artist. I do all types of music. They just don't understand." Motherfucker,
they understand all right. Fans are not idiots. Well, most of them anyway. If
you make your little "girl song" or "club song" and your
fans don't respond, it's probably because it sucks. Since I've only been bumping
"Fishscale" since it came out, I'm going to use Ghost as an example
whether you like it or not. Ghost doesn't change on his songs that would be
grouped in the "girl" or "club" category. Listen to "Be
Easy." He's talking about keeping you awake because he's boning your sister
and switching your Cris with urine. Even on his Neyo song and "Never Be
the Same Again," Ghost did Ghost. A lot of these motherfuckers will get
on a real soft beat and talk about "Baby I love you so much you're the
greatest" and then get on a fake Lil' Jon beat and talk about being a pimp,
and then getting on a hard beat and talking about guns. The formula is pretty
simple to figure out. And if all these so-called artists are wondering why fans
don't take to certain songs, just think back to great artists of the past. Just
because Leonardo da Vinci was a dope artist it didn't mean he had to do every
genre imaginable, especially because he probably wouldn't be good at all of
them. Imagine him standing outside like, "Damn G, they like my painting
but they're not feeling my poems. They don't get me as an artist." Emeril
cooks, Samuel Jackson acts, and if you're going to rap, fucking do you. And
I might just cut off the next interview when I ask someone about their damn
album and they say, "I have songs for the pimps, hustlers, ladies, and
everyone else. I have mad flavors. This isn't Baskin Robbins you corny motherfuckers.
Where did Joe Budden
go?
I was talking to
a fan at a Ghostface show and he said he bought the album because MF Doom was
on it. That right there let me know this is definitely a new time in Hip Hop.
Doom is cool. I'm not one of those Doom fanatics that wears a mask and says
things people can't understand without playing Dungeons and Dragons, so maybe
I just don't get it. Isn't Ghost one of the all-time greats at this abstract
shit? How can you buy a Ghost album for Doom? That's like buying a Michael Jordan
jersey because he was teammates with BJ Armstrong.
It's looking like
some managers weren't too happy with what I wrote last week. Sorry I blew your
cover. Most managers make things so much more difficult. If you want to get
a drop from an artist, most times you just have to tell the artist and it's
a wrap. If you tell the manager, it tends to take forever. I know that sounds
crazy because managers are supposed to be the ones organizing everything, but
most of the time they're just pimping their artist. And sometimes managers have
some unknown cats, so they try to trade favors like, "I'll have so-and-so
do a freestyle, but I need an interview on so-and-so junior. Sorry idiot, shit
doesn't work like that on HHG. Take that corny shit somewhere else. Some of
you have probably already seen this. Before I started at HHG, I didn't even
think about managers, so I know a lot of people haven't, but start paying attention.
Poison Pen is going
to be putting out his "Money Shot" LP through Duck Down. Finally someone
steps up. If Pen has the right marketing, he could be crazy famous. Not too
many people have a personality and style like Pen and I guess people are just
going to have to wake up.
For everyone asking
about the Joell Ortiz journal, I'm told it's coming this weekend. I know just
as much as the rest of you as to why Joell's keyboard suddenly stopped typing.
Anyway Killah Priest is going to be keeping a journal on HHG now also.
If you haven't
been to RapMullet.com in the past week, definitely go check that out. They redesigned
their site and it looks A LOT better now. They always had the dope content and
now they finally have a dope site to go along with it. I know I love having
them as a part of the HHG team. And shit, look at the HHG team RapMullet,
9th Wonder, Joell Ortiz, Dr. No, and now Killah Priest. That's a pretty good
starting five if you ask me.
