Ya
know what time it is....it's 730 ! Dec. 15 2004
Soooo...lotta new
things happening...Thanksgiving came and went, the Diplomats gave out turkeys
to feed the homeless (take that take that Sally Struthers) and Nas' album got
bootlegged...a lot to get into this time.
Congrats to Saigon for signing to Atlantic. A lot of people had been saying
he was signed...he was in talks with Atlantic for awhile but it was never official
until last week. Last year at this time Saigon, Stimuli, and Grafh were all
unsigned, now they all got deals...remember what site you heard it first from!
Major props go to Nas for making the album of the year, and one of the best
Hip Hop albums we've gotten in a loooong time. "Street's Disciple"
is pure fire. There's no crazy "radio-friendly" songs like Nas has
been able to sneak by his die-hard fans but it's just a great Hip Hop album.
Kelis is on the album, of course, and Salaam Remi definitely did a good job
on the beats. If this isn't a 5 mic XXL album then I don't know what is right
now.
Big props go to me for reuniting Wyclef and Canibus. Gotta give Dee Jekkyl his
props too. Canibus' people saw the interview, got at us, I got back to Wyclef's
camp, and soon they were doing shows together. Witness the power of HHG!
Jin. Let's talk about Jin. I've gotten a lot of hate for "hating on"
Jin. First, the term "hating on" something is bullshit, I've already
gotten into that, so let's just talk about Jin. He got his father to do a "Bridging
the Gap" remix. On the track, his father is speaking broken English and
has absolutely no musical ability. First off, that's a huge disrespect by Jin
and his pops to Olu Dara. After completley biting Nas, Jin's fans are coming
back and saying that he made the track as a joke. Who the fuck is Jin? Weird
Al Yankovich? Second, if it's a joke, it's really sad, because he's playing
up the stereotype that many Chinese-Americans have to fight, and that's the
working in a corner store stereotype. If Jin meant that to be humorous, then
he's straight-up making a mockery of Chinese culture and people of all races
should be mad at him about that. There's this thing called minstrelsy, it started
with Whites playing Black music in Blackface, not only stealing music but also
making fun of African-Americans at the same time. If Jin is willing to stoop
that low to get a laugh, then he's more pathetic than I thought he was. And
if the track wasn't meant as a joke, then he's still more pathetic than I thought
he was. Jin's done. Nice career buddy.
Another MC who needs to watch his career is everyone's favorite whiteboy, Eminem.
Everyone is disgusted right now with "Encore," and with "Mosh"
still getting rotation on MTV, it's making Eminem look more rediculous than
ever. Bush won the election, so the song is pointless. It also goes to show
that Hip Hop has a long way to go before we make any major changes in important
forums like politics. Lookng back on the election, we had P.Diddy and Eminem,
arguably two of the most influential people in Hip Hop, rallying people to vote
and vote against Bush. What happened? Bush is still in office. Now people can
blame that on Bush fixing the election and Kerry not getting enough Botox, but
whatever the reason, I see it as a challenge that if Hip Hop wants to be as
big as possible, we all need to step our games up.
Oh yeah is anyone else mad about Eminem remixing 2Pac? Please let the man rest
in peace. And shame on anyone who takes an acapella from Pac or Big Pun or Biggie
and tries to make a "new" song with it. Those people know damn well
they wouldn't have worked with them if they were alive. That's really some dumb
shit and it gets no love in the real Hip Hop community. Let the rappers who
passed rest in peace and stop fucking up the music. Dicks.
So Young Buck stabs somebody at the Vibe Awards, let's see if "Shorty Wanna
Ride" now. Word is his next single..."Shorty Wanna get Stabbed"
(cymbal crash) Who stabs someone when there's security cameras everywhere and
the dude is already being held? That doesn't make you tough, it just makes you
stupid.
So you're a struggling DJ, what should you do??? Make an instrumental mixtape!
They're easy, and they require even less work than making an "exclusive"
mixtape that so many lame DJ's drop that aren't really exclusive to anyone.
Only one website (yes, this one) and a couple of the big DJ's get the real exclusives,
other than that don't believe the hype. And Big Mike and Kay Slay are beefing.
Great. More DJ beef. Just what the game needs.
There were rumors that Rocafella was gonna get sold, now that it is, it's gonna
be interesting to see who's gonna drop and who's gonna get dropped. I doubt
M.O.P. is ever gonna come out. And I'll be very surprised if Grafh drops.
I gotta take a break...that was a lot of venting for one column...thanks for
listening.
