How would you define “adult contemporary hip-hop”?

It’s a sound, a subject matter and even more, a FEEL. A lot of people need to realize that A Tribe Called Quest is adult contemporary hip-hop, point blank.

Did you ever check out Marco Polo’s album Port Authority? What did you think?

One of the dopest albums to come out this year.

When’s your album with Murs coming out?

Christmas.

What’s your favorite hip-hop movie and why?

Juice, because of the soundtrack and the look of it, but Belly has the best cinematography and the best intro.

When are you and Sean P going to do an album together?

Dunno, homie.

In a past Ask 9th, you said you were working on two compilations. I know one is Mr. Dream Merchant Part 2. What’s the other one?

The Wonder Years

What if Lil’ Mama’s people paid you $1 million to remix “Lip Gloss”? What would you say?

Put Monie Love and JJ Fad on the jam and let’s go.

Have you ever wanted to smack anyone who questions Fruity Loops?

Nope, because I always peep the person who is actually questioning me.

What tracks off Cloud 9 did you and Skyzoo record together?

None.

I just wanted to know if NCCU was a great school for music production and do you know if they have clubs or programs for people that like hip-hop?

Yes, it is. The hip-hop initiative is led by Kawachi Clemons, who is spearheading the music industry program. Mr. Clemons has recently created numerous programs that surround the hip-hop genre.

How many records do you have in your collection?

Dunno, not enough though.

How would a 9th Wonder/Bone Thugs collaboration sound?

Uh, I don’t know.

Have you ever considered working with South African music for sampling?

Not really.

Did you ever used to spit?

NO.

What do you think of Necro as a producer?

I haven’t listened to enough Necro to judge.

What do you think of Jazzy Jeff’s new album The Return of the Magnificent?

HOT! It’s adult contemporary hip-hop at its finest.

Where can I find the Allies EP?

On the ‘net.

Do you have any idea what’s been happening with O-Dash lately?

Living life and writing rhymes.

What album are you most looking forward to this year?

Erykah Badu’s.

What are the advantages to working with live musicians when making beats?

They can replay lots of things.

I’m looking to go digital with my production. What kind of computer do you recommend I get?

Any kind that is fast.

I have a manager but I know another dude who really does shop beats to people. Can I keep my manager and use this other dude too? What do you think?

Dunno. It may cause some confusion between the two.

I have a beat CD to an artist and he ripped one of my beats and used it on his mixtape. What should I do?

There is really nothing you can do because you would spend more money taking him/her to court than you would get out of them.

What’s going on with Joe Scudda’s album?

Coming soon to a theater near you.

What’s holding up your compilation?

It’s coming. I have two coming. Stay tuned.

Would you and Black Milk ever do a project together?

You know, I wouldn’t mind. This is hip-hop. Anything can happen.

Do you find yourself switching up drum sounds and patterns more now that fans have an idea of what to expect from you?

The thing, and I have said this MILLIONS of times, I have beats with DIFFERENT sounding drums in them. I’ve HAD them since 2003, BUT people won’t pick that.

I’ma put that twice so people can READ IT.

The thing, and I have said this MILLIONS of times, I have beats with DIFFERENT sounding drums in them. I’ve HAD them since 2003, BUT people won’t pick that.

I said, “PEOPLE WON’T PICK THAT.”

Sometimes when I’m working on beats a lot I get tired of it. What do you do to stay inspired and keep it fresh?

I love music. I am blessed to do it for a living, so that’s what keeps me going.

What’s going on with Edgar Allen Floe? I always liked his music and I want to know what his next project is.

He had an album coming out on Shaman Works, but I don’t know what’s up with that.

Word is that you were in Atlanta and met up with Skyzoo. What kind of response did you and Sky get in Atlanta and did it surprise you?

Pretty good. It was really a surprise to see him. We rocked!

Who do you think the most slept-on producer from the Golden Era is?

Diamond D. He REALLY does not get ALL the credit he deserves.

Why does anyone like Crime Mob?

‘Cause they just do. Why do you like the music that you like?

What’s the worst hip-hop record you’ve ever spun while DJing?

I don’t play bad records. If I don’t like it, I don’t play it.

What’s one hip-hop album that we should all check out this week?

BLACK MILK, BLACK MILK, BLACK MILK, BLACK MILK.

I want to send my demo in to Big Dho but I figured I should send a case of ginger ale along with it. What brand does he like the most?

Seagrams all day. Try some of that classic Canada Try too.

How often do you play your songs when riding around or just chilling?

All the time. I have a G4 setup in my bathroom when I take a shower.

Why does everyone love Jay-Z? I think he’s garbage.

That’s cool. That’s your opinion.

What will it take to get on your Top Friends list on MySpace?

I am booked up on that. You really have to be a FRIEND of mine.

How large is your music collection? How important is it for producers to have a large music collection or knowledge of different genres of music?

It’s aight. I don’t have a collection like Questlove’s, but it’s getting there.

Do you think European rap will play a bigger role in the U.S. in the future?

I dunno, but hip-hop is very much alive overseas.

Are you working on any tracks with Chi-town artists?

Naw. Hopefully with Lupe soon.

What are you working on with Skyzoo today?

Nothing. He works when I don’t.

Will your album with Murs be coming out on Warner since he just signed over there?

Maybe, maybe not. We’ll see.

Is the album you’re working on with Murs titled Murs for President?

Nope.

Do you think that Only Built for Cuban Linx II will be as good as the original?

There is only one purple tape…Cuban Linx II will be dope in its own right.

If you could only work with one artist for the rest of your career, who would it be and why (dead or alive)?

Jay-Z, ‘nuff said.

What kind of potential do you think Lupe Fiasco has?

He has more than just potential. He already has it, so Lupe is just fine.

I’m a big fan of Chino XL. What do you think of his music and is there any chance of you working with him?

To be honest, I have never listened to a lot of Chino XL’s music, so I can’t make that call. Lemme check up on that and we’ll see what’s up.

I read a couple years back that you had recorded a track for Q-Tip’s album that featured Little Brother and Method Man. Is this true and if so, will we ever hear this track?

No, LOL. I swear stories can change over time. Q-Tip and Method Man were in the studio while we were mixing The Minstrel Show and we got Q-Tip’s blessing on “Still Lives Through.”

9th, What pre-amp would you suggest using for a home-based studio? I’m thinking of purchasing an API A2D.

I don’t use a pre-amp so I have no clue, homey.

How much time do you spend digging in the crates before you start a beat?

It depends. If I find the sound I like, I go!

Is it true that you started using an MPC? If so, which model and how do you like it?

Untrue…

What has been the exchange like between you and your students in your class so far?

Great. I learn a lot from them too! There are 150 students in my class, so we gets it in.

What do you think about Kev Brown?

Great friend and dope producer. His flow is incredible.

Ed. Note: 9th is not answering questions about Little Brother. Keep sending your questions to ask9th@gmail.com, just don’t expect any questions regarding Little Brother to be answered.

Hey, 9th. I know everyone’s on MySpace and trying to do their thing on there. I know it can be very valuable, but what are the negative sides to networking on MySpace?

I haven’t really seen a negative side from a marketing standpoint. If you have lots of friends, you can send them a bulletin about your music or your album.

When will we hear the first song of you and Monie Love?

I dunno yet. Stay tuned.

What’s going on with Mr. Dream Merchant Vol. 2? When are we going to hear that?

Soon. And look out for The Wonder Years.

Sometimes when I’m making a beat with a chopped sample, it sounds good but I always wonder if I should add more to it. How do you know when you’ve added too much to a beat and it sounds too busy versus not adding anything and having it sound boring?

I don’t look at it that deep. I go for feeling. I always have. I don’t do things to tracks because of protocol. I do it to create a feeling.

What do you think about the Ultimate Force album being re-released? Do you think these re-releases are a good look for hip-hop?

I think it’s good. Fashion can be reintroduced, so why not music?

Who do you think is the next up-and-coming producer that we should watch out for?

I am a big fan of Black Milk. He’s not really up-and-coming. He’s been doing his thing.

What do you think of Black Milk’s Popular Demand album?

It’s a dope record.

What’s the last hip-hop album you bought?

Whew, lemme think. It was The Game’s The Doctor’s Advocate.

Ed. Note: 9th is not answering questions about Little Brother. Keep sending your questions to ask9th@gmail.com, just don’t expect any questions regarding Little Brother to be answered.

Will you still be working with other members of the JUSTUS League?

Yessir, all day.

Do you think more artists will do the free download for their projects?

I think so. I think that doing that is a good idea to give out free music. There’s a lot of people selling terrible music, so why not give away some good music?

How’s the Murs album coming?

Dope. We are almost done.

Do you consider “This Is Why I’m Hot” to be hip-hop?

It’s hip-hop to my 14 year-old nephew, but as a 32 year-old man, it’s not hip-hop to me.

What do you think of the 50 Cent/Cam beef?

HILARIOUS. Why beef with Fif?

Have you checked out Jeff Chang’s latest book Total Chaos? It might be good for your class.

I have used one of his books, but not that one. We onlt use Ego Trip’s and Vibe’s History of Hip-Hop.

What do you think of Sean Price’s new album Jesus Price Superstar?

Flame-broiled hotness…I hope it gets its just due.

Is there a difference between a beatmaker and a producer? I love “P-Body” by Sean Price. What it do?

A beatmaker makes the beat. A producer constructs the song after the beat is made (Ed. note – think about who’s asking the above question).

I’m a real big fan of Sean Price and I’m from Angola. I’m looking forward to the new Sean P album. How would you compare Jesus Price Superstar to Sean’s last album Monkey Barz?

Jesus Price is a SUPERB follow-up to Monkey Barz.

How long did it take you to finish the beats you did on Jesus Price Superstar?

Not long. Not long at all.

How’s your album with Buckshot coming?

We ain’t started yet.

Do you use the Fruity Slicer in Fruity Loops? Do you recommend it and why?

I’ll recommend a soda can and some popsicle sticks if that’s what works for you. If you can make something hot with that, then so be it, but Fruity Slicer is hot.

Have you ever heard of Foundation 86 out of Chapel Hill? They’re pretty dope to me and I was wondering what you thought of them.

Naw, I haven’t heard of them.

Do you think Black Star should do another album and what are the chances of you working with Talib Kweli?

I have worked with him already (shhh…). I think Black Star should do another album.

How was it working with Strange Fruit Project?

Hot! Those are my dudes. They’re dope.

If I made a mixtape with all your beats and all my rhymes, would you check it out?

Yep. A lot of cats already have…

Album of the week and why - Busta Rhymes’ The Big Bang because it’s the best album of the year.

What are your goals for 2007?

Live life and prosper!

What albums are you looking forward to in 2007?

Detox, Detox, Pete Rock’s NY’s Finest and T.I. vs. T.I.P to name a few.

Are you making any resolutions?

Yeah, to spend more and more time with my kids and to get my degree.

Out of all the tracks you produced in 2006, what are your favorites?

Hmmm…The Mary J joint “Good Woman Down.” It actually came out in late December of 2005, but it started to see light in 2006.

What was your favorite album of 2006?

THE BIG BANG, PERIOD.

Everyone knows how crazy your last album with Murs was. How is the new one coming?

It’s coming along great. It’s much different from the last one.

When are we going to get some new Little Brother music?

Soon. It’s about time for the boys to blast off with something new from the new record for the party people. I know Pooh has some new jawns on his MySpace.

Whaddup, 9th? I was just wondering if you gave out a final in your hip-hop class.

The class was a writing-intensive class, so there was only class presentations for the final. But NEXT semester, it’s ON!

What did you think of Styles P’s Time is Money?

I haven’t heard that yet but I have to check it.

What’s the last album you bought and when?

Classic Sinatra, which I lost, so I have to cop another one.

What did you think of Jay-Z’s album?

I like half of it. The lyrics are incredible throughout.

Should you have been on the Jay album?

Man, I feel like I should be on EVERY album, LOL. Naw, it just wasn’t meant for me this time around.

Are you feeling Nas’ new material? What do you think of him using the same sample from “Thief’s Theme” on “Hip-Hop Is Dead”?

Man, I wish he would team up with Preem, Pete, Large Pro, Tip, Just Blaze, Kanye and L.E.S. for the album. That’s just my opinion.

What do you think of will.i.am as a producer? Is he good for hip-hop?

The thing I love about will.i.am is this: he is POSITIVE. He’s not misdirecting any kids to anything negative. Some people may think that he is soft, but I praise homie. And all I know is that “Compton” jawn is crazy!

What do you think of Killah Priest? Would you ever work with him?

I have always been a Wu fan. My favorite Killah Priest song is “The Professional.” I would love to do an EP with all Wu cats, with RZA’s blessing, of course.

How was it doing “Dreamz” with Saigon?

Man, that beat is sooo old, like two years-old. I am glad I make beats the way I do because it’s hard to tell when it was made. This was a beat I gave to Sai awhile back. Next thing I knew, the song was on the net a year and a half later. The song is DOPE. Hats off to Saigon.

Why do you think a lot of mainstream artists use their best material on mixtapes instead of albums?

I dunno. Maybe because they don’t think it will work in the present marketplace. It would if everybody FINDS a new marketplace.

How involved do you get in the clearing of your samples? I’m guessing you leave that up to the label.

Yep, the label handles it. But I have to give all the info though.

How involved are you in the making of the Mick Boogie/Little Brother tape?

Not at all. Big Dho is spearheading that with Tay and Pooh, so expect nothing more than dopeness.

I’m a big fan out of Philly and I heard a line on Ness’ new mixtape where he says “9th told me I’m a beast.” Are you working with Ness? Also, I was wondering how you feel about Philly hip-hop as opposed to other East Coast areas.

Myself, Fatin and Khrysis did like twelve jawns with Ness two summers ago. Ness is dope. I love Philly itself, but the hip-hop Philly has produced over the years has had a profound effect on the way hip-hop sounds.

What is it that separates you from other producers out there?

I dunno. Internet heads question my diversity. I am diverse. A lot of cats don’t get to hear it a lot because of the beats that are picked from me. I would say this: Not too many producers can say they produced for Destiny’s Child and M.O.P in the same year. I guess the artists I work with makes me diverse.

I heard the distro on the Hall of JUSTUS compilation got messed up. What’s going on with that and how is the album doing?

That’s a Big Dho question, but I can speak for him when I say it ALWAYS gets messed up when we go indie. I dunno why, but it always does. The album is going to do what it’s going to do. If people can find it, then they will cop. It’s good music.

Do you like any Jamaican artists? If so, who? Do you see yourself doing any reggae work?

I am a big dancehall fan. If I can get SuperCat and Jamal-Ski on the same record, that would be hot.

I’m curious about your hip-hop class. What format are your tests in and what types of questions do you ask?

We start testing next semester, but the test will run in a chronological fashion.

Hey, 9th, just a couple questions: I make beats, mainly samples, and rappers these days are mad stingy. Is there any point in getting a manager and where would I look for one?I’m just stumped nowadays. I’m trying the whole MySpace thing but lately its all about follow the leader and who’s making a Lil’ Jon beat or who’s making a Pharrell beat. I know you say good music is good music and people will hear it, but DAMN, the biz is hard. Anyways, I’m ramblin' and I guess I’d just like to hear your take on the subject. Thanks.

Man, the business is really built on names. It’s about making good music AND a name at the same time.

9th, I heard you only have one beat on the new Little Brother album. Is that true? I know there’s crazy rumors flying around everywhere.

So far I only have one track.

Busta left L.O.N.S. at their peak.  Q-tip left ATCQ after their peak.  Which break up had the biggest impact on hip-hop? Which group would you have liked to hear more from?

To me, the EPMD split and the Pete Rock/CL split had a huge effect on me.

How’s Darien Brockington’s album doing?

Pretty well. I am happy for D. Brock. He is a talented brother.

What do you think of Ghostface dropping another album before the end of the year? Is it too soon since Fishscale is still new?

I think Ghostface should wait until first quarter so I can get on the record.

There are a lot of big albums dropping in the next couple of weeks. What album are you looking forward to the most and why?

Game and Jay-Z. From what I’ve heard so far, the Game record is incredible.

Yo, 9th, since you’ve already told us your favorite Pete Rock, J.Dilla and Primo tracks, it’s only right that you tell us your favorite Prince Rakeem aka RZA tracks?

Shadowboxin
Triumph
Incarcerated Scarfaces
Verbal Intercourse
Ice Cream
Daytona 500
’97 Mentality

Man, I could go on and on.

What do you think of Nas’ new material?

Haven’t heard that much of it.

Since you and Jean Grae are tight, you think the domino effect would end up where you work with the great Immortal Technique? Or have you already?

Dunno, but for the most part, my trio is Jean, Murs and Buckshot.

What do you want to be doing ten years from now?

Professor at a university teaching the History of Hip-Hop.

Are you going to get Murs on the new Little Brother album?

That is not up to me.

Is there really going to be other producers producing on Little Brother’s next album? I read that. Please tell me it’s not true.

Yes. Some of our best work is when other producers get involved. See Chitlin Circuit and Gangsta Grillz.

How’s your hip-hop class going?

FANTASTIC.

Why is Joe Budden so heavily slept on?

Because Joe Budden has something to say, and since the labels don’t market to grown-up hip-hop fans, me included, he gets pushed to the back.

Hi, I’m a female who loves and admires hip-hop and I absolutely love you, 9th and your unmistakable beats, but I was wondering why you very slightly make beats for the R&B scene and/or female singers. We R&B people can work with your beats too. And also if you could work with any female singer, who would it be and why?

All of my beats can be R&B because they all contain a melody. I would love to work with Faith Evans and Jill Scott.

If you had to choose the better MC who would it be between: Just-Ice or Bumpy Knucks?

Bumpy Knucks, but Just Ice is a LEGEND.

Besides Bobby Womack, who is the most sampled man on the planet?

James Brown, of course.

I heard you have something done with Saigon. Is that true?

Yes, for Dream Merchant.

It's kinda a dumb question but, if you are 9th wonder, What's the 8th?

I dunno…Jay-Z maybe??? LOL.

I know a cat of your caliber probably doesn't have the time to entertain my question. But if you're up to it, how about a beat battle? No b.s., just for fun. After all, that's what hip-hop is all about anyway the sprit of competition. I'm in the SC metro area we exchange CDs or have a nonbiased party make the final call.

Nah, that's aight. I feel you though.

Since Raekwon is requesting beats on his MySpace will you be sending any his way?

I may…

Do you think it's smart for up-and-coming producers to put out beat-CDs?

Nah. I think it's good for up-and-coming producers to just do hot jams. Your music will get out there.

How do I get music on HipHopGame?

Hit up Brian, the same cat you emailed for the questions.

What did you think of Jay-Z's "Show Me What You Got" and how Just flipped the beat?

I think it's dope. I think it's a dope dance song reminiscent of the early 90's dance songs.

When are we going to see a 9th Wonder/Cormega album?

You'll see some 9th/Cormega jams.

With everyone claiming to put out classics these days what, in your opinion, are the creative elements necessary for a "hip-hop classic"?

First, it has to be OLD before it can become a classic. I think a lot of things I have put out have been labeled "classic" but I disagree. I think that a classic somg has to have some age on it.

Is there anything out there that you won't sample? I was watching The Wiz with my kids and heard the sample for "Fashion and Flare." I went crazy when I heard it...You're a GENIUS, man, pure unadulterated...Keep doing ya thing, homie.

Thanks, man. Yeah, there are some things I won't sample. I think a lot of things are off-limits.

JVC Force or Mantronix and why?

Mantronix, just because. LOL.

What are your favorite J.Dilla tracks?

Love it Here, Climax, Go Ladies, Fall in Love Remix, Nag Champa, Dont Nobody Care About Us, Runnin, Stakes is High, Only Two Can Win, Don't Cry, AIRWORKS!!!!!, Dancin Dilla...

Major props on the Lloyd Banks track. How did that come about?

Thanks, man. I like it too. It's a good look. G-Unit looked out.

Has DJ Premier given you any feedback on "Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers Part 3"?

He thought it was dope. He did the scratches on it for me, so he was definitely with it.

The Game said you're on his album The Doctor's Advocate. Is that true? Can you tell us about the song?

Naw, I haven't heard it yet. I'm excited about it though.

I was just curious, what's going on with The A.L.L.I.E.S? I've heard a few of their songs and like the music they're making. Just wondering if you know about them releasing any new material and where I can hear more of their older songs?

They got a slew of jams. Hopefully we can release them soon.

Ok, here's the deal, 9th, you got Kool Keith, Common, Trends of Culture, Black Sheep, Sadat X, Ghost and Rae, Del, OC, Scarface, De La, Ras Kass and Black Thought all waiting on a beat from from you. Money being no factor, who gets the first beat and why?

Ghostface and Rae all day because of Ironman and Cuban Linx alone. That's all the reasons in the world for that one.

Is O-13 of Lower 3rds the real godfather of 919 backpack rap?

What is backpack rap? I don't do that. I'll do rap music thought. I know Omatade though. He is good peoples. We've been friends for 12 years.

How long did it take for people to realize your talent?

People are still realizing my talents to this day. There is a new 9th Wonder fan born every day, but the first time was back in '98.

Do you have any plans to work with UK artists?

Hopefully soon.

Okay, you won't pay me to find you samples...will you TRADE me samples? I got mad rare records shit that go for like 2 g'z on eBay.

Probably them same records are in somebody's basement in NC for $3. LOL.

What are your top 5 Pete Rock beats?

T.R.O.Y.
Tru-Master
Light Ya Fire (cats ain't heard that one yet…woooweeeeeeeeeeeeeee)
Fakin Jax

I know personally that there's a lot of talent in the Kakalaks from living there back in the day. How long do you think it'll take to get both North Carolina and South Carolina out there in the mainstream? I hope it's one day soon, people don't even know that though it's the South the Kakalaks are on another level.

The mentality of the people in both states has to change first. People have a hard time thinking that artists can come from the Carolinas. People are fascinated by what they can't touch.

Would you ever consider selling your drum sounds and bass tones?

LOL. Hell, I won't make much money. According to everybody, I only have one snare to sell. LOL!!!!

How do you feel about AZ being so underrated? Is there a chance of you and AZ working together?

Maybe in the future. AZ has done some classic jams. I don't understand why he is underrated.

Why don't the beats ride out more on Murray's Revenge? I wish they did…

Maybe I did on the next album. The new Murs/9th jawn is entitled Sweet Lord.

What program do you use to chop your samples?

FL Studio.

Do you think you'll be on Jay-Z's new album?

Let us ALL pray.

How many of your tracks end up bootlegged on the internet?

About 200.

If you were ever to come across an MC who did a freeverse over one of your productions and it was actually quite immaculate, would you consider giving them a chance to collaborate with you? If that MC was me, what would you have to say?

Let's do some more songs. That is basically what happened to Skyzoo.

What up, 9th? What are your top five Primo beats?

Supa Star
1, 2 Pass It
Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers
Brownsville
Up Against the Wall (Getaway Car Remix)

CanUcomeToDetroit2helpMeGetNtheGame

I came to the D with Scion…where were you???

Do you dig for samples online?

No.

How do you feel about T.I. calling himself the "King of the South" when Little Brother is putting out better music?

I don't think we are putting out "better" music. I think our music is different, but still dope. I am a big fan of T.I. and wish him continued success because I bumps the hell out of King.

How much longevity do you think Southern hip-hop has? Is it here to stay?

"Southern hip-hop" as a region has been around since Uncle Luke, so if you are speaking from that standpoint, then it's here to stay.

What do you think of people who talk about an MC's age? Who do you blame for age mattering in hip-hop?

I don't know who to blame. I guess the media…

Will you pay me to find you samples?

Naw…LOL.

How has J.Dilla influenced your sound?

Lots of ways…basslines, chops…Dilla influenced EVERYBODY.

Will you and Sean Price do a whole album together? What do you think of that?

Naw, I like when Sean P works with different producers.

How's the new Murs album coming?

We ain't started yet.

Did you start teaching yet? How's your class?

Yep. We started two weeks ago. We will be in the next issue of XXL in the 360 section. The class is great! We watched Beat Street last week! We use these books as texts:

That's the Joint by Mark Anthony Neal
Black Noise by Patricia Rose
Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists
Vibe's History of Hip-Hop

Who's the best rookie in hip-hop? Saigon, Lupe, Papoose…

Mmm, hard to say. My fav is Lupe, but watch out for Skyzoo!

What's up 9th? Just wanted to let you know that there are peeps in NC supporting you, Justus League and all of the other emcees spitting REAL hip-hop. Do you feel like the DJ Khaled "Grammy Family" beat is similar to the "Let It Go" beat from you Gangsta Grillz mixtape? It seems a little too close for comfort, at least to me. Maybe they thought no one would recognize. Keep doing what you're doing.

Rap is an art. You don't own no loops. It's good as long as it's hot.

What do you think of Primo and Christina Aguilera's collaborations?

Love 'em. Preem told me he was gonna do it a while back. How does everybody expect our sound to get back into the mainstream if we don't do this? We have to do this. Hats off to Christina Aguilera.

If you could collaborate with one producer, who would it be and why?

Pharrell and Dr. Dre.

What would come out of a collaboration with you and Black Thought? What about Dudley Perkins?

Something hot.

Who do you think the most underrated rapper is, dead or alive?

The Rapper Big Pooh, Pharrell and Roscoe P. Coldchain.

I've been to a lot of Little Brother shows and have never seen you there. When are you going to tour with Little Brother and how come you don't now?

Workload, family, workload, teaching, beats, workload, label, workload.

What do you have to say to those who think sampling is cheating?

Who are these people? Didn't everybody listen to Preem's rant on Moment of Truth? If you take sampling out of hip-hop, you better start erasing 85% of hip-hop's catalog. Let's start with Wu-Tang, Biggie, Jay-Z, EPMD, Black Star, Common, uhhhh…you got about two albums left. LOL.

What would you be doing if you weren't getting paid to make beats?

Teaching history.

What's going on with the Murs album? I thought he was doing his own thing on the next album.

We doin' it again.

When's the JUSTUS League clothing line coming?

Dunno, homie. We're working on JL action figures now.

What up, 9th! Can you tell us what compressor settings you use for your vocals?

Dynamics Processing in Cool Edit.

You haven't done a lot with West Coast artists besides Murs. What about rocking with Strong Arm Steady or Mistah F.A.B? Come to the Bay and drops some beats for these cats 'cause we hungry.

Send me some music.

Was there a reason you didn't remix "Heaven" on God's Stepson?

Dunno…

I have been admiring your music for a very long time. I think probably before most people even heard of you. I've been producing for about twelve years and it's good to hear something different. I was chilling with ANT from Atmosphere and we were both admiring your work. Do you think you will ever do an atmosphere or slug track because of the Murs and Slug Felt thing?

Dunno…we may do something like that for the new Murs record.

I am just starting out and I have the opportunity to sell some tracks to a cat with a big budget. What do I charge? I don't want to overcharge or undercharge because both would make me look bad.

You should have a manager to help you make those decisions. Two heads are better than one.

I don't know how much you used Soundclick, or any other independent music sites before you started getting your shit out there worldwide, but did you ever come across muthaf*@%az that would say your shit wasn't "rap-ish" because you used soul samples instead of 808 beats over some annoying as self-composed string harmony, or some appregiated piano chords? And then they hear your best beat (one in which a lot of MC's you've been shopping beats to say is hot) say "that shit wasn't bad?" I swear if one more whack a$$ producer makes some smart comment, I'ma have to cut somebody.

Man, once you get to a certain level, people will NOT like you because so many people do. It's just the game, man. I had to get used to it, but at first it's rough.

What's the next collabo album you're going to do?

Murs, one mo'gin.

I have a dilemma. Whenever I hear your beats, it makes me want to sample just like you. The thing is I don't want to bite your style. What should I do?

Just keep at it. You will find your own sound by working on beats. Everyone is influenced by someone. It's all good.

What's up with the Hip-Hop University stuff Big Dho was talking in his HipHopGame interview?

Myself, Play from Kid n Play and Kawagi Clemons are starting a hip-hop institution at North Carolina Central University. I am teaching a hip-hop class called "Hip-Hop in Context: 1973-1997."

Ayo 9th, how do feel about pretty much the entire FL Studio user population (at least for hip-hop) uses you as a defense for FL when people talk down upon it?

Man, people are scared of change. Some people feel that they have to have a beat machine because that makes them "official hip-hoppers." I mean, I think it's great a cat uses me for inspiration. I'd rather have THAT effect on a kid than an effect that would cause him/her to do something stupid. If it was me on the other side and I see a cat in a critically-acclaimed group with two dope emcees, heavy press, big co-signers, created friendships with his idols, lots of fans and supporters, four platinum records, a teaching opportunity and a label deal ALL off of a software program his homie/fellow producer/lawyer told him to experiment, I would use 9th Wonder as a defense too…Wouldn't you?

Where can I get a copy of the 9th Wonder/Pete Rock Class is in Session CD?

DE INTERNET, BABY!!!!

What's the last CD you bought?

The last album I bought was T.I.'s King.

When did you know you were ready for the big leagues as a producer?

I didn't, Jay-Z told me I was in a way.

Is booty music hip-hop?

Yep…Luke, Poison Clan, Quad City DJ's, 69 Boyz, 95 South, Tag Team…YEP.

What's going on with Kaze? Where's he been?

Kaze is doing his thing! He's been doing shows and grinding it out.

How's the Percy Miracles album coming?

Shhhhhh.

I heard you have your own artist. Is that true and if so who is it?

Trye and very true…He's an R&B singer named Tyler Woods and three emcees, Tightman, Big Remo, and the Beast of the Middle East, ad Treal.

How has MySpace helped you?

It's always good to meet new people. This is a faster way.

I heard Big Cas say on a mixtape, "Don't worry if I steal beats from 9th." Can you talk about what that line meant?

The "Dollas Circulate" beat…I think that's what he's talking about…and a lot of cats done asked him about it I guess.

Big fan, 9th. What's it going to take to get the labels to come down to North Carolina and snatch up some of that talent?

When the people of NC support their own…

What's the best way to clear samples? I want to put out my album professionally but I need to clear a lot of samples first.

Naw…only if you plan to sell a million copies, you're good, unless you're sampling the Beatles, Prince, Michael Jackson, or something obvious.

Yo whaddup, 9th? What really happened in Fayetteville when LB performed with all those snap rappers? I heard Phonte dissed everyone…what's going on?

I don't think Phonte dissed everybody. He just stated what was going on. I wasn't there. He just stated what was going on. I wasn't there so it's all hearsay to me as well.

I just copped Boot Camp's The Last Stand. "Here We Come" is dope and it doesn't sound anything like your other beats. How was it working on that and how many more beats do you have like that?

Lots and lots.

What do you do to get out of your beat slumps?

Walk away from the machine.

What's going on with Median?

He's working, hopefully to have something out soon.

Waz goen on zun my name iz kunte kinte I am a mandinka warrior from the isle of jouferae I was wondering when is the new sean price lp dropping and how duz it zound? (guess who sent this)

LOLOLOLOLOL…the Sean P album is crazy. I hope cats is ready.

Do you have a release date for Mr. Dream Merchant Part 2?

Nope.

Which west coast artists are you feeling and who do you want to work with out there?

Cube, Kurupt, the Game, Snoop of course, Bishop Lamont…man, I really wanna meet Dre.

Can you tell us what vst's and plugin's you use?

Naw.

Do you have any plans to rap or sing like Pharrell and Kanye?

Naw.

Do you think Atlantic should have dropped Lupe Fiasco back when his album leaked or did they do the right thing by pushing him back? How do you feel about Lupe's music? Do you think he can make it in the game?

I do. I like Lupe. I think it has a lot to do wit the visibility of an artist. People don't get into you unless you are on TV.

It was dope how Little Brother was in The Source talking about classic albums. I know there had to be some in there that you guys didn't get to mention.

Yeah, Bahamadia's first joint and a couple of others…

Do you think you'll be doing any work with the Wu or any of the Wu affiliates?

I wish…GHOSTFACE KILLAH FOR GOD SAKES.

Could you make pop music for Jessica Simpson or somebody like her if you were asked to?

Yep.

I'm 14 and just started getting into hip-hop. Where do you suggest I start?

Know your roots and learn from the greats.

When you add your friends on MySpace, do you actually check their profile first or do you just click on approve?

Just click and approve unless it looks satanic.

Do you ever see yourself using live instruments on beats?

Someday.

I was wondering when a producer samples another track to make a beat, is the producer or the artist who purchases the beat responsible for getting permission to publish the track?

The producer or the label is responsible for the clearing of a sample.

Do you ever make beats just for yourself that nobody else will ever hear?

All the time.

Do you upgrade to the new version of Fruity Loops every time it comes out?

Naw, not every time…unless it's a crazy update.

How do you feel about the Boondocks? What about BET?

I love the Boondocks. I think Aaron McGruder is a genius. BET, well, huh…

7/14/2006

How long does it usually take you to make a beat?

It really depends on the beat.

Hey, 9th, I noticed in your last update you said you thought Cory Gunz was NYC's top up-and-comer, my question to you is why don't you think Skyzoo is?

I think Skyzoo is a dope emcee…VERY dope, so I should have said Skyzoo as well. Sky knows what's up.

Where do you rank yourself amongst other producers like Kanye West and Timbaland?

I don't rank myself. I let other cats do that. I just do beats and get paid.

How has DJ Premier influenced you?

He influenced me in a BIG way, especially with his attitude about the game.

What's the last song you heard that made you say, "Damn!"?

Umm, let me see…I would have to say Mr. Porter on Busta's Big Bang and Dilla's "E=MC2" and Monica's Dozen Roses.

How did you know Big Dho was the right manager for you? A lot of these managers are grimy. How grimy should a manager be?

He should work hard. My relationship with Dho goes way past management. Our kids are growing up together.

Would you remix Jeru? He needs that.

Yep. I like Jeru.

What do you think of UK hip-hop?

I think UK hip-hoppers have more of an appreciation for it than we do at times.

I heard you and Royce did a track together. Is there any truth to that?

Yessurr.

How do you feel about Outkast's new work? What is your favorite Outkast album?

I love Outkast. ATLIENS is my favorite Outkast album.

Why do you think so many producers fall off? Have you ever felt yourself falling off? What do you do when you feel that?

No. I don't limit myself to producing. Producing can be a gateway to many more things, so I don't worry about falling off.

How's your Mr. Dream Merchant album coming?

Dope. Real dope.

Do you have any remix projects coming up? What do you think about remixing Busta's album? I think that would be dope.

Naw, not really. I think I am done remixing albums. I would do some remixes on a couple of songs though.

When are you guys going to drop some new Little Brother music?

Soon, like later on this year.

Can I send you some of my beats to check out? My boy's got a demo you need to hear too.

Email me at ninthwonderbread@hotmail.com

Has Fruity Loops ever approached you about being their spokesman? You need that endorsement money and I think you'd be perfect for that program.

Yep. That's in the works now.

Did you watch the BET Awards? What'd you think of them? Why wasn't Little Brother nominated for anything?

We don't make that network any money. I thought the show just wasn't for me, although Beyonce, Busta, Ne-Yo, and Prince did a great job.

Who do you think is going to be the next young dude to blow from New York?

I have no idea, but hopefully Cory Gunz.

Are you going to do any work with Papoose?

Hopefully soon.

Is there any way to strip vocals using Fruity Loops? I've been trying to do that forever, man, and I just can't find anything to do to that.

No, sir. No can do.

Who is your favorite MC?

Right now, it's Mos Def followed closely by Lil' Wayne.

I read somewhere that you were a pro wrestler once. Is that true? I think you'd be dope in the ring.

Naw, man. That's Phonte wildin' out.

Do you use Waves 5.0 as a mastering program? What do you think about that?

Naw, don't use that.

Do you mix and master your own tracks or do you let whoever buys the beat from you do that?

If a major label buys a beat, then most of the time they do the mixing and mastering.

Is there any advice you can give me as far as spreading my music to people who will actually listen? Thanks 9th!

Man, keep making hot joints. Good music spreads faster on its own than wack jams.

What's bumping in your car right now?

Double X Posse - Not Gon' Be Able to Do It
K-9 Posse - Ain't Nuthin To It
Boogiemonsters - Honeydips in Gotham
Nice and Smooth - Old to the New
Rotten Raskals - Oh Yeah
Milkbone - Keep it Real
Shyheim - On and On
Royal Flush - Iced Down Medallions

And A LOT of New Edition and Guy.

I heard Jean Grae say that Jeanius album is dropping this year. Is that true? Are you doing any tracks for the Phoenix album?

I don't know. We've already done some tracks for the Phoenix album.

What advice do you have for our group? We're just starting off, we have our first album done, and we're trying to get radio play. What do you think we should do?

Stay true to yourself and don't worry about radio play. There's too much BS to get on commercial radio.

Have you ever come across a cat who's like 14 and knows the roots of hip-hop. I'm fairly young and everyone blames the woes of hip-hop on my generation, but I know there's people like me who have done the research and know the roots and classics. What do you think?

Most younger cats I know who know the roots had an older influence, which is a beautiful thing. It's not so much your generation, but what the media has done to your generation. It's really a study of demographics and age, because you you are 19 and the oldest sibling in your family with no older cousin or uncle or anyone to turn you on to hip-hop's earlier years, then you're stuck.

When are you starting your own label? Do you even want to?

I don't know, but I want to do it.

What's your favorite beat you ever made?

A beat named "Me Down Girl."

What was the hardest sample you ever had to chop?

Ummm, this '70's record I got (LOL). Naw, "Threat" was a chop. People think it's a loop, but it ain't. I wouldn't say that was the hardest, but the pressure was on.

What's up, 9th? I'm a rapper from Dublin, Ireland. We haven't got much of a scene but there is plenty of talent here. Any thoughts or ideas on how we could expand and make hip-hop from Ireland more widespread?

Keep pushing, man. Good music spreads worldwide easier than bad music.

Why does everyone think you can't make hot shit on Fruity Loops? It seems like whenever I tell people what I use, they roll their eyes. I'm tired of these MPC-ass motherfuckers who can't make hot beats getting props for their equipment.

You have to do you, man. Like I said, it's easy to follow what everybody else is doing. Individualism isn't easy.

You guys (Little Brother) talk about your religious upbringing from time to time and I hear prayer mentioned in the music. How has your religious background helped you in your career. Also, do you think that you sacrifice any parts of your faith in pursuing success in the industry?

Being raised in the South, all you hear is religion. It has definitely kept me grounded. I don't feel as if I have sacrificed anything. God created hip-hop too.

Are you looking for new artists to work with?

I am always looking for new talent.

I really want to make beats, 9th. Where do you think I should start?

Study the greats.

Are you guys going to get that second single for The Minstrel Show?

Yeah…but…well, yeah…

Hey 9th, I've talked to a lot of people that hate on loops. Personally, I feel that if you find a dope loop, then there is no reason to chop it. What is your opinion on loops?

70% of all sampled hits throughout rap history are loops.

Why does it seem like it's so hard for North Carolina artists to break through?

We live in a state not known for entertainment so it's hard for people to believe.

After the success of God's Stepson, do you think you'll be doing any work with Nas?

You've got to ask Nas that one. It's never up to the beatmaker these days.

Have you heard what's going on with the remix to Tru Life's "New New York" single. I heard that Jay and Nas are supposed to get on that.

Nope, nothing new.

What's up, 9th? As a young producer who isn't really established yet, what do you think I should charge for my beats?

I started out charging 50 dollars...some even cheaper than that

I'm getting ready to send my beats out to labels. What do you think I should do to prevent them from getting jacked?

Put drops all over it...NEVER send your beats to a label with a TRUE CONNECT!!!

How do you get around middle-men in the industry? I'm running into a bunch of them and they all want favors and it's mad frustrating.

You can't!!! It's dog eat dog and everybody is for self...that's why music is suffering...

Would you work with Dip Set? I think they would kill your beats.

I really like Juelz Santana. Homey can rap. I would do something with him no question.

What advantages does Fruity Loops have over analog equipment and why haven't you tried out the MPC?

NO advantages...I have never been a follower...I have always liked to do stuff differently, so that's why I stay with Fruity. Hip-hop is supposed to be original in some way right???

Do you use the piano roll on kicks and snares?

Naw.

What do you really look for in a sample?

A feeling in my chest, that tingle. If it ain't there, I don't feel it.

What advice do you have for me in terms of getting my contact list up?

Get out and meet people. People still like old-fashion sit-downs and chats.

9th, I am a huge fan of the whole JUSTUS League movement. You and Khrysis are sick producers. Quick question for you, I flow myself and I see myself as a conceptual MC. Do you think that you reworking samples and bringing back skill will thrust a conscious movement that will smother this commercial nonsense?

It may, but what happens when what we do start to sell a million records every time out...will we be commercial then???

Did you do any production on the new Boot Camp album?

YESSIRRR.

What's good 9th? Are you working with D-Block?

Never have worked with D-Block....but I would love to work with Jada, Styles and Sheek if I had the chance.

First off, I would like to say that you truly are an inspiration to so many upcoming producers (including myself). All of your beats just have that vintage hip hop feel you know. It sort of brings the game back to it's essence. I'm a youngun' with an old soul, so I can appreciate what TRUE hip hop was (rarely what you hear nowadays) and you and LB (and the rest of the Justus League) always provide the people with a feel of what it should be. You've accomplished so much, I'm just wondering what keeps 9th wonder motivated ? Have there ever been times when you just wanted to uninstall the Fruity Loops and call it quits?

The music never made me wanna quit, however the business will tear you apart if you let it...all those years of hip-hop, and the looks on my baby's face keeps me working, point blank.

Ever since I heard my first 9th beat, I was hooked. The sound was a breath of fresh air and I've been producing myself on Fruity Loops and Cool Edit for a year or so and I've been trying to figure out how to get the drums to have that grimy sound that you give them. Do you have plug-ins or do you use a lot of reverb and filters?

Some filters, lotta compression. You just gotta tweak it 'til it sounds right to you, or feels right.

When sending out beat-CD's, should I send out full beats or snippets?

It really doesn't matter, because snippets can be looped. I wouldn't send any out if I didn't have an established name, because someone can steal your work.

How much will it cost me to get a hot beat from you I have been spitting for years and never found a hot producer to match my style. How can I get something from you and keep in mind I'm not the richest MC.

Gotta holla at Big Dho, my manager.

9th, how do you feel about many MC's (known or unknown), using your instrumentals so much on their mixtapes and promos? I ask this because I have used a number of them on my mixtapes and I was wondering do you take a good listen when someone is rocking on your beat?

Yeah, I do. I would rather someone take a joint I already did for someone instead of a beat they found on the net though.

What up 9th, what is the A&R mailing address for The Hall of Justice?

Man...good one..and I should know...lemme see...hold up...........

email hallinfo@hallofjustus.com

How long did it take you before you were making great beats like you do?

Man, I guess 4 years. It all depends on who's listening to the beats to determine if it's great or not. The beat could have been one of my OLD joints...and cats STILL think it's hot!

4/28/2006

What kind of music are you listening to right now? Any particular album you enjoy overall?

I listen to everything I grew up on. RARELY do I listen to anything past 1997.

First and foremost I would like to say thank you to yourself and L.B for keeping my faith in hip-hop. The music you have produced for L.B, Jean Grae, Buckshot, Sean Price, Murs etc captures what the true essence of hip-hop is all about. I would like to ask do you have any plans to come to London?

Hopefully soon. I plan to do some DJ spots over there...so be on the lookout.

BSKI from Brooklyn. What up 9th? I'm dying to quit my damn job and do this music thing fulltime. I really need to cause all I have is drum patterns and beats in my head all day, but you know, bills got to get paid. I'm in the process of getting a manager and shopping some beats. When do you know it's the right time to leave your job and do this fulltime? How did you know when to do this fulltime?

Really, there is NO right time. You just gotta say f%&k it and just do it...no matter what...it's a risk, but you only live once.

I love your beats man, but is Fruity Loops all you use? Because your sound is real professional from just using FL.

FL it is. No more, no less

Do you think you'll be doing any work with anyone from Wu? I think that would be a sick combination.

Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and Method Man has been a dream match-up for me. I got like 100 plus beats Ghost, Rae, and Meth can get on. It's all about making it happen.

What's good 9th Wonder? I've been using Fruity Loops for awhile and it seems like I can't make any beats on it. Did you ever have that problem when you first started? Can you help me out and give me some hints how to use it?

Man, you gotta break it until it works for you. I have seen FL flipped 20 different ways, so there is no set way to use it.

Whatever happened to the Allies?

Man, still trying to get them out there. They have a lot of great music that needs to be heard.

It seems that all these producers are putting out instrumental albums now. Will you drop one and show people what time it is?

LOL!!!!!! I think if you take the 300-plus beats on the net now, you prolly could make your own catalog!

One thing people get confused is rap and hip-hop. I believe rappers are destroying hip-hop. There are no real emcees going mainstream anymore. Its all about bitches, money, and cars. 9th, I'm from the South East part of Georgia. The only person that made an impact on this end is Camouflage and he was killed. Do you think its possible for a southern emcee to make it in a game full of gangsters?

I mean, don't get it confused. Rappers are not killing the game. The Rapper Jalil in Whodini is a RAPPER. It has always been RAPPERS in the game since Sugar Hill Gang. What's killing the game is a lack of knowledge of it, and slighting the culture 'cause of greed and money. There IS a way you can do both, make money and make good music too. You just gotta do you, because no matter if you talking bout guns or peace, if its wack its wack.

First, I want to thank you renewing my interest in hip-hop. I don't need to go into detail about how f'd up the 'game' is and all that but I want to express my deepest appreciation for your music. That song 'All for you' is one of the realest songs I ever heard and now you, LB, and the Justus League have a fan for life! But my question is about the current state of affairs in North Carolina. By now I'm sure you've heard of the Duke Lacrosse team rape scandal and the racial tensions that are building up between NCCU and Duke. You being an alum of NCCU, I thought maybe you would have some sort of input. What would you say to the students of NCCU?

First and foremost make sure that it doesn't happen on your OWN campus before anyone runs to Duke pointing fingers. Let justice do its job, and not jump the gun.

What's good, 9th? It seemed like you and Jay Dee were close. How did his death affect you?

You know the funny thing is, I never met nor talked to Dilla, but we had a lot of mutual friends, and fittingly enough I was making beats when I found out he passed...I always had a connection with him that way...through beats. It just made all of us just stop and look around...you know, slow things down...

What did you sample for "Sweetest Language"? That song is beautiful.

I sampled a 70's soul record

Little Brother's last album, The Minstrel Show was a real work of art that was created and which I think can never be duplicated ever. It is one of the best and purest hip-hop albums. I have ever heard in the last 10 years. When I first heard it I thank God that there were still people who take hip-hop seriously and not no quick way to make some money. 9th wonder, I think you are a genius and should be consider one of the greatest producer ever. Every producer have there own sound and all, but I have yet to hear a whole album when all 17 tracks sound so wonderful and beautiful. You have some of the best drum patterns in the history of hip-hop to me. I have compared all your beats to all the Hip Hop classics, I couldn't find none better. If you read this e-mail can you please tell me how you prepare yourself to create and produce such a wonderful album.

Thanks for all the support homes!!! I mean we just do music, we don't try to over think it. That's the beauty of NC. It helps you NOT to overthink things. So I just do beats, beats that make me feel good...

How long have you been using Fruity Loops?

Six years.

What else do you use besides Fruity Loops?

Cool Edit Pro.

I know you've been working close with BCC. Any word on albums from OGC or Hurricane Starang?

Naw...just Sean Price and hopefully another Buckshot record.

I am from Durham, NC born and raised in the Bull City. I currently live in the A. I want to know do you think you all get the love from NC like you do other places. I will say when I go home I don't hear you all getting the airplay I think you should get, I just wondered what's your take on this?

You are NEVER noticed at home...and at times it used to bother me, now it doesn't, cause I can walk the streets and no one would notice me most of the time. I want to live my life. I have 27 yrs before 9th Wonder was ever thought of...so I want to live life.

I was wondering why you think that your production style has become so popular and accepted in today's Hip Hop Community where it seems that everyone is playing follow the leader. Old School samples have always been used but never incorporated into the music the same way that yourself and Kanye are doing right now. Do you think Hip Hop was looking for a change?

I just think Hip Hop is looking to spend money on a good album, not two and three songs. So if any trend I want to start or follow is the trend of good music and DOPE records.

Do you have any upcoming collabos in the works in the near future like what you did with Murs, Access Immortal, and Kaze?

Murs and I are doing another one, for sure. Access Immortal was not a collab at all, that was just a situation where he got beats off the net, but its all good, we spoke about it and everything is solid. Kaze and I did a couple of jams, so hopefully we will do more in the future.

If you want to ask a question to producer extraordinaire 9th Wonder, send it to ask9th@gmail.com
