What’s up?
I’m cool. I’ve been doing a couple of shows, hitting the studio…the same ol’.
Are you happy with how your latest album Ridin’ High is doing?
I always wish for better. It’s cool. We’re still grinding. It’s still early.
Do you have any regrets over how Ridin’ High was handled?
Yeah, on everybody’s part. On me and MJG’s part, on the label’s part…Everybody could have done things a little different. Yeah, I have regrets, but shit, we live and learn.
Maybe sales-wise it didn’t do as well as you wanted, but did you give the fans what they wanted?
Definitely. Everywhere we go, they love the album. Everywhere we’ve been, they’ve loved it.
At the end of the day, does that mean more to you than album sales?
Hell yeah! Definitely. You definitely want your fans to love what you’re doing. The sales are also important. I want it to do good also.
Ridin’ High got good reviews. Do the reviews of the album mean anything to you?
I mean, it’s cool. The good reviews are okay but a lot of people that review albums, that’s their job. They review albums. The reviews are cool, but I like to see what it does at the club when we’re performing or when people come up to you on the street and tell you that they got the album. That’s what we’re looking for. The reviews are good, but I’m just saying…
You guys are releasing four videos from songs off Ridin’ High through four different sites that make up a mini-movie. How did you come up with that idea?
We had to do something that hadn’t been done before. We were going to do some underground shit. The treatments were written and one of the guys came up with doing a little movie with four of the songs combined. We thought it was dope.
It’s definitely a new way to promote an album. What do you hope this accomplishes?
I hope other artists follow suit and just do the same thing. We’ve always been trendsetters, in a way, with southern hip-hop. I think we’re going to start a trend. Cats might start doing this after we do it.
You’re also going online with it instead of going to TV with it. What does that tell you about the game today?
Well, it’s definitely different right now. It’s definitely different. We just have to reverse gears. The game has really changed. Hip-hop is really made right now for an artist to go pop. That’s the way they changed the game. It used to be that the underground shit, that was the shit that was popping. The shit is still underground, but a lot of this shit went pop. It’s pop shit. MTV and BET are made for pop. If you have an artist who doesn’t do that, you’ll never see that artist on MTV or BET. We had to find a different way to do this and people will follow suit.
Did you plan on making a mini-movie when you made the songs for Ridin’ High or did this just sort of happen?
It just kinda happened. We really just took four songs. That’s why we loved that treatment so much. This cat took four songs and made a little movie out of it.
Do you see yourself and MJG doing any acting in the future?
Maybe MJG. I might direct. I have a couple of things that I’ve been writing, but I’m not really trying to be on the screen.
Have you been watching 3-6 Mafia’s Adventures in Hollyhood on MTV?
I’ve caught it a couple of times. I like it.
Do you see yourself doing a reality show?
I don’t know. If the opportunity came, I would probably sit down and look into it and whatever, but a reality show, I don’t know.
You worked with Young Buck on “Say It To My Face” off Buck the World. What was that like?
Young Buck is my dog. I wish he was on our album. I think he was touring overseas when we were working on the last part of our album. If we could have gotten him for our album, it would have been complete. We did a dope song for his album. It’s a beautiful thing. I love that dude.
Established artists work with you and say that it was always a goal of theirs to work with you. What does that mean to you?
That’s love. You can’t hate on that. Shit, that’s just love. It’s a beautiful thing. What more could you ask for sometimes? That’s a beautiful thing to be held in that regard.
Have you started the next Eightball and MJG album?
We’re always working on the next Eightball and MJG album. We stay in the studio and we’re working on a lot of stuff. We always have another one coming.
Will Eightball and MJG be going independent for the next album?
We’ll have to see. Only time will tell, my friend. Only time will tell.
What’s going in with 8 Ways Entertainment today?
I got a couple of albums coming out this year. My little homie Devius is coming out. His album is dropping later this year. He has a mixtape dropping this year. We also have an underground album together. Me and him are doing an album called The Vet and The Rookie. All those projects are fire. We’re going to wait until later in the fall to start dropping stuff.
What do you want to say to everybody?
Ridin’ High is in stores right now. If you ain’t got it, you need to go get it. It’s a great album and everybody needs to go online and check out the new videos we got. Shooting four videos as min-movies has never been done before. Make sure you check it out.
