One of my best friends mom happens to be a lesbian and he has grown up in the same house with his mom and her partner (I'm pretty sure thats the correct term) for most of his life.

Check...homosexuality is observed in natural settings not just with the human species. The gay people I know say they have felt that way as far back as they can remember. Again, grove, can you go choose to have attractions for a member of the same sex? I highly doubt it.
