Default Who Runs the South...H-Town vs. ATL

    Taken from SOHH.com:

Alright alright alright what's up ya'll. Today we are gonna get down a dirty with a serious topic that obviously has a lot of people speaking up. The South has been a huge part of hip-hop all over the place the last few years, and has definitely had a huge impact on the state of hip-hop as a whole. Alot of people talk about H Town and the ATL as the main cities of hip-hop in the South (and this is true), but which city is more responsible for the exposure of Southern hip-hop nation-wide? Which city really runs the South?

These are questions that SOHH Gyant wanted to have on both the Atlanta and Houston blogs for today. While I do think this is a good idea (business wise) I completely disagree with both of the questions and think that they are irrelevant and outdated. First of all, The H and ATL have completely different hip-hop styles. Anyone who can't see that has absolutely no right to speak on hip-hop at all. The question "which city is more responsible for the exposure of Southern hip-hop" makes absolutely no sense. While Southern hip-hop might have a certain flavor that distinguishes it from other regions...there is no "Southern hip-hop"...there is no "Northern hip-hop"...there is hip-hop and there are different styles of hip-hop with different trends, flavors, and tendencies. Houston is completely different from Atlanta hip-hop wise. I got love for some Atlanta artists (T.I., Ludacris, Young Jeezy), but none of those guys, to me, have any comparison to Houston hip-hop. ATL has it's own swagger...it's own style...Houston does it's thing and Atlanta does it's thing on it's own too. As far as who is responsible with the exposure of Southern hip-hop...I myself would have to say that overall Houston is more responsible. Whether you like it or not H Town, Scarface, Getto Boys, DJ DMD, DJ Screw, S.U.C, and many others are what alot of people think of as the originators of Southern hip-hop. That is all I have to say about that. You guys have every right to post your opinion and let me know what ya'll got to say....I really hope you guys gimme what you got on this blog.

The last thing I have to say: To me...it is subjects like this that make hip-hop a joke. Who gives a flying fuck who the "originators" of "Southern hip-hop" are? What the fuck does it even mean to "run the South"? Gimme a break man...this is hip-hop...it is music...it's an art. This isn't some whack ass shit where everyone needs to be hating on eachother, starting beef between cities, or claiming shit that they are/aren't responsible for. Whatever happened to the strong, silent type? Doesn't anybody just do their thing, know they did it well, take their respect and shut the fuck up? Rappers all gotta be beefing, cities gotta be claiming they run hip-hop, people gotta be spitting racial shit at eachother (all over this website), and I'm in awe of how much we (hip-hop fans) support this type of idiotic bullshit. Man I love hip-hop...I got love for anyone who keeps hip-hop what it is meant to be. I will never claim that Houston runs the South. I could honestly give a rats ass what anyone thinks of Houston or our hip-hop. I give a shit about me and my city and that's it. SOHH Gyant...you go ahead and keep your high-traffic blog hits or whatever at SOHH Atlanta. I am sticking with the same shit I have always done...truth. I like ATL and a couple of my favorite rappers are from Atlanta...but you completely eliminate everything that the South is about (or supposed to be about) when you stage a question like "Which city actually runs the South?" or say things like "Atlanta, its time to let EVERYBODY know who runs the south!!"....... "However, which city is responsible for the explosion remains a hot topic in the streetz, and on blogs throughout the south." What? Blogs throughout the south? Damn the internet is whack.
    Get real dawg...

we both contibute equally....we don't get into that "who run this & that." We let EastCoast catz do that dumb shit, it doesn't help "HH" grow & thats all that should matter. So the question should probably read: "Which city has helped HipHop grow the most?" ATL & H-town are together in this southern movement

^You could also make the case for Memphis and New Orleans.

in all honestly, every major city in the south has contributed alot for hip hop...so to say houston and atl are the "only ones doing it for the south" is a big understatement......

Can't make that good of a case with miami

If we're just saying who brought the south to being more prominent in hip hop, then its a really hard choice..

    Texas - Geto Boys/UGK
    ATL - Outkast/Goodie Mobb
    Memphis - 8ball MJG/ 3 6 Mafia

Honestly, I liked ATL more when they originally came out... but now, texas is doing bigger things than ATL in my opinion...

Ok to be honest as far as pioneering in the south it's gotta go to Miami and Texas...Miami began using that bass heavy sound which is huge in the south now..a lotta songs coming out today have that chopped and screwed hook which orginated in Texas

I thought this was just gonna be an East Coast attempt to turn the South against itself........ sounds like the writer's from Houston tho not the East, and he spoke alot of truth.

In that case why not NO since Master P started one of the first southern labels that really became huge..

^Yeah No Limit had a run similar to G-Unit right now...even with those wack album covers...LOL. And just when No Limit fell off, Cash Money became huge.

The NO never gets the credit it deserves because of the people who look at Cash Money and No Limit as jokes... even those they've sold more records than any of these new labels could ever dream of and really brought the South to the forefront before anybody else.

Its a viable question. Screw revolutionized, at the time, a local sound that blew up after he died..

Luke revolutionized Miami Bass, which in turned revolutionized southern rap and hip hop....

I don't know a whole lot about the Miami scene

I know 2Live Crew's music alittle. I'd say you could attribute alot of their sounds to the same place basically the whole South got it's sound from, especially the NO, which is the Showboys 'Drag Rap'..... Wether Luke was an influence before that or was influenced by that I couldn't tell you tho. I'm too young.

I know Screw, the sound and the man, is responsible for basically everything that's happened in Texas beyond the Ghetto Boyz.... and now his style has spread into the mainstream of every part of the South, not to mention after almost every album or mixtape is done, it gets Screwed and sold again.
