Default L.C. DAVIS CONTINUES WEC SURGE

    by Mick Hammond - MMAWeekly.com

Just a couple months ago, the future looked uncertain for L.C. Davis.

Coming off only the second loss of his pro career in March, combined with the cancellation of Affliction: Trilogy in late July, Davis was in need of a fresh start.

    Enter World Extreme Cagefighting.

Since signing with the WEC, Davis has won back-to-back fights over two of the most formidable opponents in the featherweight division in Javier Vazquez and Diego Nunes. He is now on track to become one of the premier fighters at 145 pounds.

“I’m happy with my performance,” Davis told MMAWeekly.com of his win over Nunes this past Wednesday at WEC 44. “I haven’t seen the fight yet, so I can’t judge all of it, but I’m happy I stuck with my game plan.

“I went into the fight wanting to use my wrestling, keep him guessing, and I think I was able to do that. I think that definitely gave me the advantage and helped me win the fight.”

Coming off a close split decision win over Vazquez in August had Davis wanting to make a statement against Nunes.

“I definitely wanted to win in a dominating fashion,” he admitted. “My last fight some people said was controversial – and it was a very close fight that could have gone either way – but I do think I won that fight.

“This fight I was really determined to win convincingly. I wanted to be a mixed martial artist and come with a mixed bag of tricks and keep him guessing. I was able to do that and I definitely think that’s what kept him off balance and lead to me getting the victory.”

Having won three of four fights this year, including stopping Bao Quach’s 10-fight winning streak in January, has Davis’ future looking brighter than ever, and he plans to take advantage of that.

“I’m going to just keep taking it one fight at a time, keep improving on my training, and try to win the next one,” he commented. “I’m not looking too far ahead, but the belt is definitely something that is my goal at the end of the journey.

“Whatever the WEC has in store for me, I’ll be ready for the challenge.”

With the crowning of a new 145-pound champion in Jose Aldo later in the evening, and former champions Mike Brown and Urijah Faber looking to get back into the mix, Davis has no shortage of tough opposition.

“Jose Aldo is a beast, he’s amazing, and I’m very impressed by him, but I think I can fight with anybody in the weight class,” stated Davis. “I think I have enough athleticism, strength, and explosiveness to match up with anyone.

“I’m going to keep learning, getting better, and keep preparing to get to the level where those guys are, and when the time comes, I think I’ll be ready for it.”

Back on track and seemingly better than ever, next year could very well be the breakout year for Davis.

“I’d like to thank my sponsors: RevGear, Polanti Watches, Future Clothing, Cage Fighter, Mobile Wiring and all my training partners, coaches and trainers at MFS and Xtreme Couture,” concluded Davis. “I also want to thank God for his many blessings.

“Just stay tuned for L.C. Davis, because 2010 is going to be my year. I’m going after it full-go and am going to try to make a run for the title.”

Default Fight Biz: Promoter brings minor leagues to MMA

    by Steve Sievert-MMAjunkie.com

At first glance, it's a concept that sounds all too familiar – a team-based MMA organization built around up-and-coming fighters designed to appeal to fans in specific regions of the country.

However, the entrepreneur behind MMA's newest league says his venture is anything but a sequel to the International Fight League (IFL).

"The only similarity is that they had an 'L' at the end (of their name), and we have an 'L,'" said California-based promoter Roy Englebrecht, who launched the Professional Mixed Martial Arts League (PMMAL) last month. "It is as opposite as it can be. We're a minor-league operation. They wanted to be international. That's the mistake they made. They hired me early on. I advised them, as I did with Affliction. All you can do is tell people. I said, 'Guys, this doesn't make sense. Trust me; I've done this for 20 years.'"

Where the IFL failed is where Englebrecht, one of the most successful local boxing promoters of his generation, believes the PMMAL will flourish. The explicit focus of the league's business model sets it apart from anything that's been attempted in MMA before.

The league is scheduled to launch early next year with eight teams in Southern California and Las Vegas. A league-wide fighter salary cap will keep costs in check, as will a mandate to host shows in small venues, such as hotel ballrooms or high-school gyms. This is far removed from the bright lights of the UFC and $55 pay-per-views, which is exactly the point.

Englebrecht has long been a believer in minor-league sports, having helped develop the Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) Quakes into one of the most successful Class A organizations in minor league baseball. He also had ownership in the Arena Football League's Anaheim Piranhas and the West Coast Hockey League's Reno Rage. His promotional company, Roy Englebrecht Promotions, hosts the "Battle in the Ballroom" boxing series at the Irvine Marriott Hotel. This bi-monthly professional boxing show is in its 25th year, making it one of the longest running local boxing events in the country.

Englebrecht believes now is the right time, and Southern California is the right place, for MMA's first minor-league promotion.

"We have 35 million people from Santa Barbara to San Diego, and it's a hotbed of mixed martial arts," Engelbrecht said. "We can launch this with eight franchises where fans don't have to get on a plane. They can drive back and forth to get to away games in an hour-and-a-half and keep expenses down."

Each PMMAL team will fight an eight-event regular season schedule, with four home events and four away events, once a month beginning in February. The concept gives fans the chance to take a rooting interest in not just a favorite fighter or two, but in their local team. Englebrecht sees the opportunity for rivalries to develop between teams and fans and for there to be a level of passion among fans that can be fleeting on the current local MMA scene.

All eight teams will qualify for the quarterfinals of the PMMAL playoffs in October. Four teams will advance to the semifinals in November and two teams will compete in the PMMAL Championship in December. PMMAL fighters will earn a minimum of $10,000 per year, and can earn upward of $25,000 per year based on their success in the ring.

Englebrecht has set the cost of acquiring a PMMAL franchise at $70,000. By comparison, the price of entry into the NBA D-league is $1 million. He says franchises can turn a profit by drawing about 1,000 fans per show and pricing tickets between $30 and $40. The league will hold a fighter draft in December to fill franchise rosters.

So far, there's been ample interest from both potential fighters and owners, some of whom are already in the MMA business in the area. The PMMAL is encroaching on the turf of local promoters, but Englebrecht believes the league is more opportunity than threat to those promoters.

"We're making the club MMA promoter have an opportunity to be a minor league MMA team owner," said Englebrecht. "Because now you'll have exciting MMA action in Southern California, and a lot of the good, young fighters will be fighting on PMMAL teams, so there won't be anybody else left for the club promoter. We've had club promoters in Southern California who have expressed an interest in protecting their turf and what they've built up over the last two or three years to buy a PMMAL franchise because they can make more money than they can doing their individual show."

In keeping with the minor-league approach, Englebrecht doesn't plan to televise regular-season events, but he is interested in exploring the possibility of getting airtime for the playoffs.

Coker had to be sold on Walker signing – Over the past eight months, Strikeforce has made a series of moves to elevate its status from respected regional organization to the sport's No. 2 promotion behind the UFC.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has pressed all the right buttons in deals with ProElite, M-1 Global and Fedor Emelianenko, Showtime and CBS. However, his decision to sign former football great Hershel Walker went against the grain. Bringing the 47-year-old Walker into the fold played more like a headline grab than a move designed to bolster the Strikeforce roster. Coker disputes the notion that Walker was signed just to sell tickets, but he understands the skepticism. After all, he had to be sold himself.

"Initially, I told him no, we're not going to do this," Coker told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "What changed my mind was when we put him through a workout with a Division I-A wrestler, a jiu-jitsu guy and a kickboxer. He went 15 minutes, with a one-minute break and wasn't winded at all. No one took him down and kickboxing, he did really well. The ground game is where the holes are, but who doesn't have holes in this sport?"

Coker says despite the contract that's in place with Walker, the Heisman Trophy winner won't fight if he's not ready. With that said, Walker's training at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif., appears to be progressing enough for Strikeforce to green light his first bout. Walker is due to fight in January, but Strikeforce has proceeded cautiously by not announcing his opponent just yet.

Broadcasting deal could be UFC's entrée to NBC – A major deal in broadcasting could pave the way for the UFC's long-awaited debut on network television.

Cable giant Comcast is in talks with General Electric to purchase majority control of GE's television and movie company, including NBC. It's unlikely that getting MMA on the nation's No. 4 prime-time network would be a near-term priority if Comcast closes the deal. However, the cable company needs no introduction to MMA.

Through its Versus cable property, Comcast already has a deal in place to televise Zuffa's World Extreme Cagefighting brand. That could help open the door to potential negotiations between Comcast, as the new majority owner of NBC, and the UFC.

MMA has seen NBC airtime in the past, albeit through a paid arrangement with Strikeforce. The California-based promotion previously had a deal with the network in which it purchased a 30-minute, late-night block of programming to air "Strikeforce on NBC." The weekly program, carrying recorded Strikeforce bouts, debuted in April 2008 and peaked with nearly one million viewers for one episode.

The solid performance of the series set the stage for discussions between NBC and Strikeforce to air live fights. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told MMAjunkie.com in October 2008, that "it's been signed off on at many levels (at NBC) already, and I think we're at the final stages." However, Strikeforce subsequently purchased ProElite's assets, and jumped at the opportunity to partner with Showtime and, ultimately, CBS.

Given the interest NBC had in Strikeforce last year and the continued solid ratings the sport generates on CBS and Spike, the network would likely seize the opportunity to bring MMA's biggest show to its under-performing prime-time lineup. A change in ownership might jumpstart that process.

Default Jay Hieron Eyes January Return To Action

    by John Morgan-MMAjunkie.com

UFC, Affliction and IFL veteran Jay Hieron (18-4), who lost a Strikeforce title shot in August when scheduled opponent Nick Diaz was not able to gain a license to fight, looks to return to action in January.

Hieron told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) that he's "90 percent" certain he'll fight on Strikeforce's recently announced Jan. 30 show in Sunrise, Fla.

And while an opponent has not yet been named, Hieron hopes for a big-name fight.

"I'm at the point right now where I need to fight the name," Hieron said. "I need to fight somebody that's going to propel my career instead of fighting these guys where I have everything to risk and nothing to gain. I want to take that step."

Hieron said he would still be open to a fight with Diaz despite the turmoil that surrounded their previously scheduled meeting. But "The Thoroughbred" also mentioned Strikeforce middleweight champ Jake Shields and fellow welterweight contender Joe Riggs as potential opponents.

"I just want a name, and if I'm fighting for a world title, I want it to be worthy," Hieron said.

Hieron earned a win in his August Strikeforce debut with a unanimous-decision victory over Diaz's replacement, Jesse Taylor. The result extended Hieron's current win streak to six fights.

Hieron said he's remaining patient, but he plans on impressing when he returns to the cage.

"All good things come to those that wait," Hieron said. "Trust me, I'm going to make a statement in my next fight."

Default THIRD TIME A CHARM? THOMSON VS. MELENDEZ 2 SET

    by Ken Pishna - MMAWeekly.com

Third time’s the charm, right? Strikeforce certainly hopes so.

A long-rumored lightweight title unification bout between current champion Josh Thomson and interim champion Gilbert Melendez has been scheduled for Dec. 19 when Strikeforce returns home to the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The main card will air live on Showtime.

The bout was first revealed on the website of Melendez’ trainer Cesar Gracie. MMAWeekly.com confirmed the bout with Strikeforce executive Mike Afromowitz on Monday.

The two first met in June of 2008, when Thomson captured the belt, then held by Melendez. Thompson has fought only once since, in September of 2008, when he defeated Ashe Bowman in a non-title bout. Melendez has fought twice after losing the title, defeating Rodrigo Damm in April for the interim designation, then defending it against Mitsuhiro Ishida in August.

Thomson and Melendez have been scheduled for a rematch twice before, but Thomson had to withdraw both times due to injury, which lead to the interim title bouts.

“I want to get this whole interim title thing dissolved,” Thomson told MMAWeekly.com in a prior interview. “I want all the complications of, who’s the champ and who’s not the champ... I mean, everyone knows that I am, but I’ve been inactive for a year and he deserves what he’s been given, but it’s time to put it all to a close.

"I’d rather fight him my first fight back and I can move on with my career and he can move on with his.”

    Default WEC 44 Ratings

"Brown vs. Aldo" Scores 414,000 Viewers On Versus

    by MMAjunkie.com Staff

This past week's broadcast of "WEC 44: Brown vs. Aldo" on Versus scored a 0.5 household rating and averaged an audience of 414,000 viewers.

MMAjunkie.com today confirmed the ratings information with Versus officials.

WEC 44 took place Nov. 18 at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Jose Aldo topped WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown in the night's main event, and Manny Gamburyan edged Leonard Garcia in the co-headliner.

The WEC 44 ratings were similar to those for WEC 43, which drew 419,000 viewers. The Oct. 10 event, which took place at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, featured Benson's Henderson's decision victory over Donald Cerrone in the night's main event.

Of course, the WEC and Versus set a ratings record in June 2008 for WEC 34. The event, which featured a WEC featherweight championship bout between then-title-holder Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver, scored a 1.4 rating and averaged 1.54 million viewers. However, the WEC traditionally has drawn audiences of 400,000 to 500,000 on the cable station.

Versus, though. has been in a bit of a state of flux in recent months after it was dropped by DirecTV.

However, the WEC bolstered its audience soon after thanks to a recent offering from the DISH Network, which was announced in September (after the WEC rescheduled WEC 43 from Sept. 2 to Oct. 10). DISH Network, which boasts approximately 13.6 million subscribers (compared to DirecTV's 18 million), is offering Versus for free through Dec. 2 to all new and existing customers.

The WEC also recently expanded its international audience with deals in Australia and Brazil.

Default Corey Hill Returns on Jan. 23

    by Loretta Hunt-sherdog.com

Corey Hill has signed on to make his cage comeback against Mike Dizak on Jan. 23 at a Raging Wolf event at the Seneca Niagara Casino and Hotel in Niagara, N.Y., the fighter and his camp confirmed to Sherdog.com last week.

Hill, who suffered arguably the most gruesome MMA injury of 2008, said he is still under contract with the UFC, but has the promotion’s blessing to test the waters in a local-level show before making his way back to the Octagon. Hill did not compete on Nov. 20, as was advertised by a local Florida promotion.

“Obviously, with a comeback fight, we wanted to proceed carefully,” said Hill’s trainer and manager Rob Kahn, of the Gracie Tampa Academy.

Hill’s right tibia bone snapped near his ankle 10 seconds into the second round against Dale Hartt at UFC “Fight for the Troops” on Dec. 10 at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Hartt was checking Hill’s kick at the time. The 31-year-old Hill was rushed to a local hospital for treatment and overnight surgery.

Hill, a lightweight competitor on “The Ultimate Fighter 5,” was noted for his svelte 6-foot-4 frame on the series. Hill’s proportions later became the subject of much debate in the MMA community following his injury, as fans voiced their concern for the fighter competing again.

Hill, who trains at the Gracie Tampa Academy in Florida, never had any doubts though. He returned to the gym four months after the bout following a three-month rehabilitation.

“I still had a little bit swelling in my leg, so I was limping around and trying to spar standing against the wall,” said Hill. “I was giving my trainer, Rob Kahn, a heart attack.”

The fighter said pins and screws placed in his right leg to stabilize the break were removed last June. A rod remains in the leg.

Hill’s progress over the last year, which has included the introduction of jiu-jitsu training into the NJCAA All-American wrestler’s schedule, has been steady.

“Some days I’d come in and think, ‘I’m ready, I’m ready,’” said Hill. “On other days, something would happen and I’d realize I needed more time to learn. The more you learn, the more you earn.”

Hill said he spoke with a UFC representative in late October, and attended the promotion’s fighter informational meeting on Nov. 3 in Las Vegas. No timetable has been set for his Octagon return, he said.

“We decided that I didn’t just want to come back (to the UFC) to be back,” said Hill. “I wanted to come back and make an impact for the rest of my career. What six or nine more months?”

Foe the past year, Hill’s wife, a hairstylist at a local salon, has mostly supported the family of five, which includes an eight-year-old daughter and two sons, ages six and one. The UFC, which left an employee behind with Hill for his initial six-day hospital stay in North Carolina, also paid all of the fighter’s injury-related bills, said Hill.

Hill said the family also got creative in finding ways to entertain its children on a budget during the nation’s economic downturn.

“I’m the master of croquet now, and we go to the park a lot,” he said. “I’m lucky because I have someone waiting for me. Some people woke up and didn’t have jobs anymore.”

Kahn said the novice fighter’s enthusiasm for the sport sustained Hill through the tougher times.

“Based on how he’s smoking guys in training now,” said Kahn, “I’d say he’s recovered just fine.”

MEMPHIS, Tenn. Houston Alexander faltered when it mattered most, and now the UFC veteran will soon receive his walking papers from the organization.

UFC president Dana White today told a small group of reporters at the UFC 107 pre-event press conference that Alexander, who recently dropped a lackluster unanimous decision to Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson, has been cut from the UFC.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has since confirmed the process hasn't been completed but soon will be.

Alexander, who returned from a one-fight break from the organization, suffered the loss this past weekend on Dec. 5 at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale. Alexander circled the cage and didn't engage for nearly two minutes into the fight. Once he did, his explosive standup game one that earned him a big fan following with vicious knockout of Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara never truly emerged.

Instead, Ferguson used solid clinch work and takedowns to control the fight and take the decision win. Alexander is now 2-4 in the UFC with four consecutive losses, and his overall mark stands at 9-5.

"I was going to leave," White said of Ferguson vs. Alexander. "I was going to get up and walk out of the fight. That's what I thought of it. If I didn't have to hand out 'The Ultimate Fighter' trophy at the end (of the event), I would have left that night. It wasn't a good night for me."

While complimenting Ferguson for a legit career win, White also compared Alexander to former UFC fighter Kalib Starnes, who was cut in 2008 following a bizarre loss to Nate Quarry. Starnes, who later said he was injured prior to the bout, continually backpeddled in the fight, which he lost via blowout scores of 30-26, 30-27 and 30-24.

"As disgusted as I was with Houston Alexander's performance, Kimbo beat a real guy," White said. "The last thing I expected was for Houston Alexander to come in and do the Kalib Starnes."

White said he never discussed his displeasure with the fighter.

"I don't even want to talk to him," he said. "Houston had an opportunity to ahh, anyway."

The termination follows what had been a heavily promoted storyline for UFC officials. The UFC garnered a lot of positive mainstream press thanks to Alexander, a single father of six children who donated a kidney to one of his kids. The soft-spoken but hard-hitting hip-hop DJ and public speaker began his MMA career in underground fight clubs, where he quickly garnered a legendary reputation, before earning his way to the UFC.

Damnnn Houston Alexander was cool but his fight with Kimbo was a HUGE disappointment. I dont know what the fuckkk he was thinkin by just circling the octagon pretty much the whole fight. Oh well maybe Marcus Jones will take his place.
