you serious??? damn, i heard Jeff Tedford from Cal was getting looked at....dam, Bobby P came outta left field....i thought there were some other college coaches like Kirk Ferentz who are better fit for NFL, but it's a high risk, high reward here....Louisville always has a better D then realized, and as long as ATL stays healthy on D, they'll be in real good shape....he knows how to work that offense, so if ATL can get some possession WR's, finneran returning will be key, i can see ATL making a lot of improvement as long as Vick steps up to be a true leader

Surprising. I think he can make the defense better but I dont knwo if he ca n work wit Vick...At Louisville he never really worked wit mobile Qb's. Just guys like Stefan Lefors and Brian Brohm. He could be a good fit, guess we just gotta wait and see....

im not gonna comment on the hire just yet... but i have to correct your statement cuz its a lil backwards....

petrino is an offensive coordinator... and has been one at the jacksonville jags (brunell, smith, mccardell era), auburn tigers (campbell, cadillac, ronnie era), and most recently louisville cards (brohm, bush era) and he's only been at LOU for 2 yrs i believe and took them to being ranked in the top 5 offenses in the nation... yes, he did a good job of hiring good defensive coaches in louisville, but hes never been a def. coordinator...

the sole purpose of arthur blank hiring someone like petrino would be to improve the offensive scheme and playcalling... this hire had absolutely nuthin to do with improving the falcons' defense....

I understand that, but when he finally got the Head Coaching job at Louisville the defense wasnt very good at all. There games were shootouts, I remember games like 52-49 vrs Boise State and shit like that. I dont know if its coincidence, but Louisvilles defense consistantly improved season by season during Petrinos stay, there defense was great this year. And since the Falcons defense underachieved this year so I feel Petrino can influence the defense to play much better...

As for the offense, hes never really worked with a QB like Vick, Campbell a pocket passer, same wit Lefors, same wit Brohm, Brunell is prolly the best comparison to Vick. It'll be a challenge for him, I dont know if he can handle it....

if what you're sayin is "petrino will find the right defensive coordinator to improve the falcons defense"... then okay... if not, thats why i replied to it...
As for the offense, hes never really worked with a QB like Vick, Campbell a pocket passer, same wit Lefors, same wit Brohm, Brunell is prolly the best comparison to Vick. It'll be a challenge for him, I dont know if he can handle it....
ehhh... very lil base to what youre sayin... here's the easiest analogy... norm chow lead good/great offense in nc state (philip rivers), usc (carson, leinart), and now he's turnin the titans offense into a much much efficient unit with something he's never had before - a mobile qb (vince)...

great coordinators are great coordinators for one reason... they know how to use what theyre given to get the best out of it.... puttin players in the best position to have success....also, they improve weaknesses in the depth chart by adjusting schemes... auburn's offense when he was there (as i watched nearly every sec game over the past 10 or so yrs) was spread and had their more mobile qb's on the move in the pocket... alot of motion on audibles, as well... campbell was just enigmatic for his first 2 yrs there

again, im still not commentin yet on what i think of petrino as a HEAD COACH or even for this particular offense in atlanta, but the man's track record is proven....

    college coach bad move

Falcons: Petrino to become head coach
    The News
The Falcons have hired Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino to replace the fired Jim Mora, according to ESPN. The contract offer Petrino accepted will be worth $24 million over five years.
    Our View
Petrino was a hot coaching candidate a year ago as well, as there were rumblings that he turned down an opportunity to coach the Raiders in 2006. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact this hiring has on quarterback Michael Vick, as Petrino is an offensive-minded coach. He should be able to design a scheme that can take advantage of some of Vick's unique abilities, which is something that the defensive-minded Mora was never able to accomplish.

ATLANTA -- Bobby Petrino received plenty of offers during his four years as Louisville coach.

Finally, he got one worth taking.

Petrino's Reign at Louisville Bobby Petrino

Bobby Petrino is leaving Louisville to take the head coaching position with the Atlanta Falcons. Petrino was 41-9 in four seasons with the Cardinals, including wins in the 2004 Liberty Bowl and 2006 Orange Bowl.
Petrino has accepted a five-year, $24 million offer from the Atlanta Falcons to become their new coach, replacing Jim Mora. ESPN.com's Pat Forde reported the hiring and contract details earlier Sunday night.

A formal announcement was set for Monday afternoon at the Falcons' suburban training complex in Flowery Branch -- exactly one week after Mora was let go.

"This is an exciting day for the Atlanta Falcons franchise," owner Arthur Blank said in a statement. "Bobby Petrino is an extremely talented football coach who has done some tremendously innovative things as both an offensive coordinator and head coach."

Mora, who never seemed to get the most out of Michael Vick, will be replaced by a coach who guided high-scoring Louisville to a 12-1 season, capped by a 24-13 victory over Wake Forest in the Orange Bowl.

The 45-year-old Petrino met briefly with his Louisville players Sunday night to let them know he was leaving for what he feels "is the best job in the National Football League."

"I am excited about the challenge that awaits me in Atlanta, and I'm equally excited about the potential that I see in this team," he said.

"Bobby Petrino did a great job here at Louisville," Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. "I'm proud of what he accomplished. I just wish we could have kept him longer. He will do a great job for the Falcons."

    SportsNation: Petrino to Falcons
    New Orleans Saints
Bobby Petrino is the new coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Did the Falcons make a good choice? Is Louisville a top-tier coaching job?

    • Tell SportsNation what you think.

Petrino's first order of business: getting more production out of Vick. The Falcons star became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards but never seemed comfortable in the West Coast-style system installed by Mora and his offensive coordinator, Greg Knapp.

This season, the Falcons were last in the league in passing and 25th in scoring with their average of 18.2 points.

Louisville never had any trouble putting up points under Petrino. In 2006, the Cardinals ranked second in the country in total offense (475.3 yards per game) and fourth in scoring with a 37.8-point average.

Petrino had a 41-9 record in four years at Louisville, leading the school to the Big East title and its first Bowl Championship Series appearance in the Orange. He had just completed the first year of a 10-year, $25 million contract.

"In short, he's a difference maker who will bring a strong identity to the Falcons -- one our team will buy into and take on as their own," Blank said.

Petrino's name repeatedly came up for other coaching vacancies, including an embarrassing episode in 2003 when Auburn set up a clandestine interview late in the season to gauge his interest in possibly replacing Tommy Tuberville.

Petrino met with LSU after the 2004 season and turned down the Oakland Raiders' job a year later. Louisville twice renegotiated Petrino's contract, giving him hefty raises in hopes of keeping him.

"This is where I want to be," he insisted.

That all changed after the Falcons fired Mora, just two years after he led the team to the NFC championship game. Atlanta missed the playoffs the past two seasons, going 7-9 in 2006.

Petrino's previous NFL experience includes three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. He then returned to the college ranks, first as Auburn's offensive coordinator in 2002 before heading to Louisville.

The Cardinals went 11-1 and captured the Conference USA title in 2004, their final year in that league before moving to the Big East. Under Petrino, the school known more for its basketball program won at least nine games every season and played in four straight bowls.

"I'm in shock right now," Louisville kicker Arthur Carmody told ESPN's Joe Schad on Sunday night. "We're coming off a great Orange Bowl win and we were all thinking national championship. I didn't think this would happen. He said he enjoyed college football. He's a great coach and we're going to miss him."

"Nobody thought this would happen, but nobody's complaining about it," Cardinals defensive lineman Earl Heyman said. "You can't fault him considering what he's done for this program."

The leading candidate to replace Petrino figures to be Tulsa coach Steve Kragthorpe, who has taken the Golden Hurricane to three bowl games in four years after taking over one of the worst programs in the country.

The Falcons interviewed at least four NFL assistants, but Blank and general manager Rich McKay decided to go with an established head coach this time.

Mora had never been a head coach until he was hired by the Falcons. He got off to a rousing start, guiding Atlanta to a division title and coming up one win short of the Super Bowl. Then it all fell apart.

The Falcons lost six of their last eight games in 2005 to miss the playoffs and keep alive the franchise's streak of never having two straight winning seasons. Atlanta followed a similar path this year, starting 5-2 before losing seven of nine -- including its last four home games.

That didn't go over well with Blank, a hands-on owner who has spent lavishly to build a perennial playoff contender. He also was bothered by several off-the-field incidents, most notably a radio interview late this season in which Mora said his dream job was to coach at the University of Washington, his alma mater.

Mora said he was only kidding, but had to apologize after being summoned to Blank's office.

The day after a season-ending loss, Mora was fired.

Interesting choice. I think they had to get an Offensive guy, they tried a defensive guy with Mora and it didn't work. He did put together a pretty good defense talent wise but injuries hurt them this year.
    2x *NFL Pick 'Em CHAMPION*

so they pulled out and robbed him
with the same gun they shot him with
Put it to his head and said "You scared ain't ya?"

They had to get an offensive guy, you have the best rushing QB ever, you gotta find a way to utilize that better.....i still say Cam Cameron or Ken Whisenhunt better, just because i like NFL guys with experience more, and Cam really knows how to work a run offense

Flip is right... hiring the "defensive-minded players coach" didnt work, so now theyre hiring an "offensive-minded" mean ass s.o.b....

i STILL wont comment because i have yet to hear who will be the defensive coordinator... hue jackson (bengals WR coach) was named the OC, but once i see whos named the DC, ill give my thoughts on all of this

ive been askin around and pokin thru websites and from ive seen/heard, arthur blank REALLY liked singletary's interview.... i wouldnt be suprised if he was named the DC off that in spite of not gettin the head coaching job...

the thing that held him and the others back was they didnt have any head coaching experience on either level, just coordinators or assistants....if wisenhunt had been a head coach somewhere hed prolly have the job... same with rivera...same with singetary.... but outlets are sayin that arthur blank was ravin about singletary's coaching potential.... i think hed be a great hire

^ yeah i dont REALLY know what to think about mike zimmer because hes actually a 4-3 coach but parcells made him run the 3-4 defense with the cowboys... so its difficult to judge off that.... they had some good schemes and blitz packages but their secondary was terrible at times (which i dont believe i can blame on zimmer)

then again, a 3yr old child could run a offense and defense betta than knapp and donatell.... addition by subtraction, mid.... drinks on me lol
