    Default MLS...

Why isn't MLS more popular than it is? They've just got an expansion team in Toronto and with the World Cup coming up, I thought it would get more shine...

I like soccer, no, truthfully, I LOVE soccer, but it's a sport that's not appreciated like it should be here in America. If it was taken seriously by more people it could even be a feeder league to the wealthy European clubs...

Fuck, all MLS needs is a relegation system and it'll be perfect...

    Agree? Disagree? Drop your thoughts...

It needs a relegation syste,, it needs to lose the draft system, it needs to allow clubs to own players rather then the league and it needs to integrate more with the European leagues. It needs to fall in line with Football rules rather then American sports rules generally.

I was in a meeting the other day and in the lobby they show new music videos, did I see a Lumidee World Cup song?

for starters, the MLS couldn't compete with European clubs, the mls plays soccer, european teams play football. two different sports.. people may not be able to tell the difference, but soccer has different rules to football.

and what teegz said the mls need to let the clubs own their players, problem with American sports is all the restrictions..

i heard somewhere that the mls will be banning headers soon enough, 'cos it 'could' possibly damage the neck... american sports are far to overprotective.

What are the rules differences between Euro football and soccer? I like soccer, I don't follow it all that closely but I'll watch it once in a while.

There's no fundamental difference. He's taking the piss.

It's funny how you call football boring. Because I find a point every 30 seconds to be tedious.

Good shit! I was thinking it needed some of the EXACT same things...

I wish FIFA would step in and and force some of these things (although we all know that's not going to happen)...

Fuck FIFA! Fuck Sepp Blatter! But yeah, MLS needs to look at Europe, they're being stubborn by deploying this ignorant system.

Maybe pay players more. So they might actually want to play in the MLS.

I agree that soccer isn't appreciated in America like it should be. In America soccer is like the Olympics. People pay attention every four years when the World Cup comes around IF the United States does well. The 2002 World Cup was front page material while it was going on but after that soccer just faded back to where it was before the World Cup.

The biggest problem with the MLS in my opinion is simply the fact that the MLS players aren't as talented as the players in a lot of other countries. If MLS teams were matched up with teams from England, Spain, Italy, Germany etc. they would get beat pretty soundly. All of our other major leagues (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL) have the best players in the world. People come from all over the world to play in those leagues, but when it comes to soccer, the best players in the world play elsewhere, as they should, the MLS is nothing compared to the Premiership or the Bundesliga.

However, I know that soccer is definitely one of the fastest growing sports among kids in America. It used to be that most kids played Little League when they were young, but a growing number are playing in youth soccer leagues, and a lot of leagues throughout the country have grown very fast. I think we are starting to see the beginning of the product of this as there is a lot of young talent on the U.S. National team that played in these youth leagues. As the leagues continue to develop and more kids play, I think the interest in soccer will grow.

Some people say soccer is boring, but if you think about it, there is no way it can be more boring than baseball. Baseball is sometimes terribly boring to watch, especially if someone were only a casual fan. The difference between baseball and soccer is that baseball has been around in America for centuries. They were playing baseball in the 1800's when soccer in America was non-existent. I think if instead of baseball, soccer was the first major professional sport in America, it would be huge right now. Instead of Babe Ruth as a national hero it would have been some soccer player. Instead of baseball being the "national pastime" it would have been soccer.

If an educated soccer fan watches a soccer game they can appreciate the game for what it is. Sometimes watching a guy like Ronaldinho can be hugely entertaining to a soccer fan but to someone who doesn't watch soccer, it can be boring. When I watch him take a pass and control the ball and lay it off to a teammate I can appreciate the skill he has because I played soccer my entire life and I understand the game. But to someone who doesn't watch or like soccer, it would probably go unappreciated.

So I think the biggest problem with the MLS and soccer in America is the fact that it is new in comparison to our other games. If baseball, as boring as it can be at times, can become so big, I see no reason soccer can't become just as big. I think the fact that we live in a country full of Republican, Patriot jackasses will help soccer in a way too. There is no other sport that has a worldwide tournament like soccer does, and it is a way for countrymen to band together and cheer for their nation. You don't have that in football, hockey, baseball, or basketball, and you do in soccer. I think as long as youth soccer in America continues to grow like it has over the past 10-15 years and the United States continues to improve its national team and do well in the World Cup, soccer will become much bigger in America than it is now.

If you honestly think either of those events are 1/one-millionth as good or big as the World Cup you are sadly mistaken.

the thing with FOOTBALL is that you have to be there to get the full feeling of passion and excitment of the game casue watching it on T.V. is boring even if your own team is playing
