    Default The Illmatic Thread

Nas was just 20 at the time that album dropped, and that was one of the greatest albums every given to us, that has to be the ending statement to why Nas is the GOAT.....who else at that age has given us classic material like that

Illmatic is a BIG influence to artists trying to stay in the roots of real hiphop...people makin good music always reference this album!!! this is why NAS is an inspirtational artist...he may not get the most GOAT awards, but this nigga always been doin it cuz he loves hiphop a lot more than ppl in the hiphop game today!! one good example comes when he hooked up with Jay-Z...that nigga knows that beef aint the way to go and that it's the wrong way to sell albums!!! DEFINITELY BIG UPS TO NAS!! this nigga took so many bullets while he was in the rap game, but he did shit that people recognize as GREAT

ILLMATIC WILL NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER BE MATCHED!! It's legacy haunts hiphop darkly on the outside looking in...It's like a gold standard that everything is being compared to, but nothing will ever match it because it is the standard (the highest acclaim)

Yeah every artist in the game is trying to create their own Illmatic, a record that is an "undeniable classic". That's why you hear people like Kanye flapping his gums until he's blue in the face talking about how his albums are classic. Illmatic dropped 12 years ago but I can still go back and listen to every song.

Illmatic is the best album I own and by far the album I have listened to the most out of the hundreds of albums I own, hip-hop as well as all other genres.

I think people still need to learn that Illmatic was basically 9 tracks (plus the intro) and it is the gold standard for records. These days people release albums that are 20+ tracks and they are hurt because of their length. Kanye West was mentioned, but there are plenty of people that do it. Just to use Kanye as an example, how much better would College Dropout's legacy have been if he hadn't included all of those skits on it? Another album that comes to mind just because I just got it is Ghostface's "Fishscale." If he took out all the skits as well as like 3 or 4 of the weaker tracks, he would have a great album. Instead, I feel that both "College Dropout" and "Fishscale" suffered as a whole because they were too long.

Illmatic is so good obviously because Nas is such a great emcee and for the fact that he had an all-star production team for the album. But if he tried to put a bunch of skits on it to set up all the tracks I don't think it would be remembered as the classic it is. Artists need to focus more on quality than quantity now. I would much rather listen to a 10 track album straight through than listen to a 20 track album with 6 skits and 3 shitty songs. Cut that shit out of it and make it about the music again because that's what makes a classic album.

FUCK the stats...people gotta know you cant place a ranking on legendary-status artists!!! think of football where some people say Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, Joe Montana, etc = GOAT or basketball where Michael Jordan, Julius Erving, Wilt Chamberlain = GOAT...this is what people should realize about these rankings!!!

What may taste good to you, may not taste good to your neighbor...keep this in mind whenever youre listen to music or youre hearing shit from the TV or Internet

Was that the list with Biggie and Pac as #1 and #2? I saw that and that list was a joke. It had Nelly on it and some other bullshit artists. Some of it was good but as a whole they are totally biased towards Big and Pac and newer people.

I mean what rapper isn't around 20 when they first drop? So almost every classic album can be said to be the same.. and as far as someone on Nas' level - CORMEGA since he wrote some of the shit on illmatic with no credit... and testament is a damn classic...

The best track? Damn that's hard, I couldn't argue if someone picked any track. I'm gonna say The World Is Yours but I could have really picked any track numbered from 2-10 because they were all that good.

You may be a young kid, but prove your position!! in a way, nastradamus was a nice album, but it was missing a lot of the Nas we know. I felt that Nas didn't really make that album--even though it was him rapping, somethin about that album wasnt really Nas. However, there were a few hot tracks on nastradamus...but kid whatever, if you think it's his best go ahead and say that!! it's really you who decides...

Naw dogg , " I AM " was Nas's pennicle before he made " Nastradamous" then he realized that he had to go back to his " Illmatic" status , thats what made "Stillmatic" such a good album that really overlooked "Nastradamous"....when his mother got sick thats what really put Nas in a decline, i guess he just wasnt hiself nomore i dont really think the cared too much about the " Godson" LP it was just something to put out b/c the people hadnt heard from him and " Streets Diciple" was just probably an experiment, believe me he'll get back to the Essence.
