in my opinion its like this, not everyone wants to hear some intellectual rhymes all the time. hell most of the people i know only like party rap, or commercial rap. those people are the ones buyin they 50 cent, mike jones, and franchize boyz albums. the masses dont want kweli, common, pap, or any of that. if they cant dance to it or get fucked up to it, they aint gon cop it. nuff said.

a friend of mine used to be into undeground , until he started producing himself. i always ask him why he doesnt like murs, blazhayblazhay anyone more? he says the beats are not dancefloor enough or some bullshit like that.

i think underground hip hop is too grimey for most listeners. im no gangster but i would much rather listen to some shoot em up shit then some bubble gum club bangers garbage.

people wjo listen to generic hip hop(most mainstream) dont listen for lyrics or something with substance they want something to dance to. thats some bitch shit right there.dont support "trapperS" they are ruining hip hop.

Well marketed garbage candy ass pop rap will always outsell well written, well thought out, deeply lyrical hip hop that asks you to think, rather then just shake your ass on a dance floor. Most people dont want to think, cant be bothered to vote,or look past the latest newspaper headline and actually read the story inside the article. Most people walk through life deaf, dumb and blind;and that, like anything else, transfers over to the 'music' they listen to.

Not everyone treats music the same way. Some people arent really that bothered about what a track is saying, just how it sounds for the 3 minutes of airplay it gets. They wont remember lyrics, just tunes. Intellectual rhymes arent for the casual listener. Thats also why so many albums are sold completely on the strength of a single.
Fat Joes 'Whats Luv' was a big chart success and on the strength of that people who have no interest in Hip Hop bought it, purely for that single. It was his first plat selling album, and it sold purely on the strength of one track cos girls were singing along to Ashanti on the hook and nothing else.

Then you also have to remember that on a universal level its purely muscial, and not at all lyrical, as theres loads of listeners who wont even know what the fucks being said, because they dont understand the language, but they feel the beat...

Also going back to my opening line in the last statement, music is treated differently by different people, because it is an art form.

Some people like music purely for entertainment purposes, other people feel it deeper. The same thinking can be applied to Art. Someone can paint a picture, and some people will look at it and say, 'Yeah thats cool I'd buy that', then never give it a second glance... Someone else will stand there and stare at it, and get more involved in it, thinking deeper about its creation, does it have meaning, what was the artist thinking when... Etc etc..
Its purely analytical, and where some people do it with paintings, you guys do it with music. You'll listen to lyrics to understand what the artist is saying, and the message they convey. Others will just hear a series of words, and wont try to understand, or care to.
It doesnt make you more intelligent than someone who listens to music for those reasons, as if the same attitude were applied to film, i bet most people here would choose similar films, whereas a connosiuer of film would probably know that there are loads of films that are first class, that you have never heard of because they dont appeal to the masses.

everybodys had good points so far. to add to it i think that the artists themselves now are focused more on sales than they are respect from their fans. broke people comin up tryin to get heard think of 10 sales as 10 sales whether its to someone who understands the music or not. and its a lot more difficult to sell a mill. to people that care about what ur sayin than to sell a mill. to people that can dance to it. another thing that i think makes a difference is that u cant just sit still and listen to what the artist is sayin. the beats now make u want to dance. u cant sit back roll a blunt drink a 40 and listen to most of the shit that gets played on the radio now, but with the greats like big, pac, nas, jay-z, etc. even though they had some shit that u can dance to they also have some shit u can jus listen and pay attention to.

people buyin shit today is usually girls that love to dance...hollister ass white boys that think they are ghetto cause they got rims on they car...and little 16 and under kids that have their mom buy all their shit for them and think 50 cent is gangsta and banks is the illest rapper alive cause they only know mainstream shit and he is one of the only dudes that does punchlines (his punchlines aint even hot)....its all about catchy hooks...no one listens to versus...i bet if u went to a franchise boys concert or some shit no one would rap the verse...just once the hook comes on everybody sings along...and thats what mainstream is now...a big ass sing a long...if u cant make a sing along track...then no one wants u no more, and there is a slim chance its goin back to skills and talent cause mad niggas is makin paper off stupid shit, anyone can write a club banger....get a beat bitches can dance too...and then talk about ass shakin and sippin cristal or some shit
