I have Vestax, you can go for Technics 1210's as they are industry standard, but they are very dated now, and for the price dont offer you anything other than a standard turntable, albeit a very solid one.
I have Vestax Pdx d3's - Which are pretty hard to find now, but you should defo look at Vestax, especially if you want to get into turntablism as opposed to straight forward djing. A good alternative if you dont want to empty your bank account are Stanton decks.
Mixers - Depends if you want to add more stuff to your set up at a later date, ie Effects, cd/mp3 turntables, a 3rd turntable... But generally a 2 channel mixer will do u. Again Vestax make some very good ones, technics weigh in with a few good ones, and then theres the Pioneer djm-300, which is a basic 2 channel mixer with bpm counters and eq, solid build, good enough.
Your headphones are way more important than many people give them credit for. I personally got myself some Pioneers which cost a fortune, but they are worth it if your playing out. You need them to be responsive and clear at high levels.
If your practicing at home, you can just link it all up to your stereo and do that. all the leads will come with your decks, mixer etc.

The carts/styli that you get with the decks should be ok for you at first. If you are heavily into scratching/tricks, your gonna need something like a Shure cart, shure are very good for turntablists, whereas stanton and ortofon for example are more for straight playing as they are very stable...

Goto djsource.co.uk - That'll have some reviews and help on it, with a forum too.
On decks.co.uk you can take a look at some of the stuff you can buy, although its a uk site, you may still find it useful as it has reviews from buyers on the equiptment they have purchased.

Everybody has their opinion. I hear the Vestax are good. I used some one night in a club. They seemed pretty nice. I liked the feel of the pitch control. Very solid and very accurate. At home I have a pair of 1200's. They are about 30 years old and still doing it well. All I have had to is make some adjustments and replace some lamps. You could probably score some original 12's for a good price on Ebay.

Mixers, I like the Vestax PMC-06 for a beginner. I have been usingon for about 6 years now. I only replaced the fader once. I kknow there are other good mixers out there that I have not tried. Do your research.

Needles, I dig ortofon built in headshell combo. Solid, nice weight and good sound. I have been scratching for along time on my ortofons. I love them.

I used to have the Vestax PDX 2000's which were great for scratching (very steady) but If you get to a certain level and are ready for the clubs, they will probably be using Technics in the club, so all your record marking and stuff will be off cause the tone arms are different on the Vestax, plus you would have been practising on other turntables that are different to the clubs so they will have a total different feel to them. My advice would be to go for the Technics SL1210's and maybe a VESTAX PMC-06PROA DJ mixer...both rigid pieces of equipment, ideal for scratching..also get you some Shure M-477 stylus needles, they are the best on the market for scratching....also dont do what some people do and get roped in to buying some fancy mixer(like the vestax 07pro) when you are just beginning on the decks cause It wont make you better at scratching, it will just frustrate you more...get some industry standard setup (like i listed above), practise hard and then in the future when you have gotten better maybe invest in a better mixer (when you know how to use the extra funtions etc)...hope that helps.....DJ Alkemy.

How do u guys feel about newbies starting out with serato or any other software??
Run for your life from the man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper's bell of an approaching looter. So long as men live together on earth and need means to deal with one another-their only substitute, if they abandon money, is the muzzle of a gun.

You have made a point here!
Sorry, I'm new on this forum that's why I answer so late...
My opinion is that is very good getting serato( or other type likes products), for these reasons:
-You can play everything you want! I mean some vynils can't be found anymore, some tunes had no vynil release, can't find two copies...etc.
    - You can use a huge pannel of formats with it (wav, aiff, mp3 etc).
-You don' t have to carry heavy weights! I mean, if you really collect, it is frustrating, you can' t take them all, and if your dj sets are made "freestyle", you will probably forget some at home..
-You have no boundaries in your creations: you can record your mate mc, and scratch directly with his voice, for example. And stop using the same sounds everybody use: "AAAAAH", "Fresh" and so on...
-THIS IS FUTURE, you can miss the train if you want...
Otherwise, I use Vestax decks (if you' re an eclectic dj, the pitch +50/-50 is helpfull) and a marvellous Rodec MixBox. It' s a really good mixer:not so expensive(400euros/450 US$), soft designed, no fake effects, a warm and equlibrated sound, precise controls, extremely precise and light crossfader( compared to the "heavy" vestax crossfaders) and it' s build to last!I mean I played with it for years in extreme situations: rain, mud, sand, winter, drunk friends, and it still sounds amazing(after cleaning, obviously). Rodec is a small factory, it lasts since the 60's, probably the inventors of the mixers. It is based in Belgium. It' s not well known by the amateurs, but professionals enjoy their products. Rodec mixers were designed for clubs, originally(4 or more voices mixers). With the djying "BOOM" in the last decade, they develloped new products, ditributed by Gemini ( I know, Gemini is worthless, but these are the business rules...).I have tried many mixers: Vestax, Ecler, Pioneer, Stanton...there was always something wrong: not enough bass, too much treble, no mids, no shape selector for the crossfader, shitty outputs etc... And I' ve found Excalibur: the Mixbox!
