    RAS KASS INTERVIEW

    INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY: STYLES

WestCoastRydaz.com: Mr. Ras Kass, back with us once again!

Ras Kass: Yeah, its been a long time comin’, thanks for having me.

WestCoastRydaz.com: I just want to jump right in to this. I know that you’ve been out of jail for the past year and I just wanted to catch up with you to see where you’ve been and what you’ve been up to. So what have you been doing since we last caught up with you last year?

Ras Kass: I’ve been around the Country, not around the World, but around the Country. I can’t really (travel) because my passport is on suspension (laughs). But its been cool doing shows here and there. I just did a small tour with Xzibit. It was the Cingular Wireless Tour, and so I got a chance to travel with that. I am about to do a few spot dates with Mos Def & Talib Kweli. I am doing most of the Eastern dates with them. But I am just putting this project together. Doing this Institutionalized Volume 1 Mixtape. Its been very good. Very rewarding. I finally got a project out when I finished it.

WestCoastRydaz.com: With all of the set backs you’ve been dealt, I know that it must be a fuckin’ relief to get it (Institutionalized V. 1) done and out!

    Ras Kass: Definitely! Definitely!

WestCoastRydaz.com: So you’ve been recording out there in the East Coast? (Where Ras is at the moment)

Ras Kass: Pretty much the recording that I’ve done for this mixtape and the next one I am putting out was done everywhere. Atlanta, New York, L.A.

WestCoastRydaz.com: So what’s the next mixtape after Institutionalized Vol. 1?

Ras Kass: Institutionalized, when I was originally recording turned into too many songs! I didn’t really realize it, but niggas was like “You can’t fit everything on 1 CD. CD’s are only like 80 minutes and shit.” So I was like “Word?” So then I decided to do a double CD. So Institutionalized is actually 2 albums now. The 2nd one is almost done, and really most of the bigger names are on that one.

    WestCoastRydaz.com: So who’s on it?

Ras Kass: I don’t want to say too many names, but I got a Dr. Dre record. Also a Hi-Tech record, a Scott Storch record and a David Banner record. Jazzy Pha said he wanted to knock something down for me.

WestCoastRydaz.com: Damn, that’s an album, not a mixtape!

Ras Kass: I had some good records on the first Institutionalized that under the right circumstances could have been album joints, but I am just really playing catch up right now. Most of my peers like Ludacris and Xzibit are on their 4th and 5th albums so I just want to get some shit out and even though these don’t technically qualify as albums I can get something out in a timely manner.

But before I do Institutionalized Volume 2, I have another mixtape which will be released in Jan. 2006 called “Revenge Of The Spit” (laughs). Like that movie “Revenge Of The Sith.” It’s dope! Got a lot of good people on that man. Talib Kweli is on it. Also Kool G Rap and Gza. You know, I just wanted to go for the spitters on that one.

WestCoastRydaz.com: So you fuckin’ with anybody out on the West Coast? Any spitters?

Ras Kass: Ah yeah… that’s the home team, so you know there will be Strong Arm Steady, Re-Up, Xzibit, Crooked I. I am forgetting other muthafuckas right now (laughs).

I am always going to balance it out. I am a West Coast muthafucka born and raised, and I love my Coast. But I also like to fuck with a lot of different people, cuz I got a lot of relationships and a lot of niggas is my homies all over the Country. Same thing with R.O.T.S., that’s me and Dow Jones, we did that together.

Institutionalized was kinda for me, but I did this one just to show love for the West Coast mixtape DJ’s that are pushin’ the line out there like Dow Jones and DJ Warrior. I wanted to do a mixtape with somebody from the West Coast definitely before I did one with anybody else from a different Coast.

WestCoastRydaz.com: Whats up with Re-Up Entertainment? I know that’s a company you started. Who’s involved with that these days?

Ras Kass: We got this new cat named Name-Brand, my homeboy named L-Dawg. I met “L” in the Pen actually. I said that I wasn’t going to fuck with nobody from the Pen but he’s a good dude, a talented cat. Then there’s J-211’s crazy fuckin’ ass.

WestCoastRydaz.com: How did you come about working with J?

Ras Kass: J knew a lot of my homies who were grimey cats. They were like, “Yo.. I know this grimey ass whiteboy. He’s a grimey muthafucka!” (laughs) But he’s also a good loyal dude. He’s not a wigga so he doesn’t try to act black.

    WestCoastRydaz.com: Anybody else?

Ras Kass: Um… well.. its still open (for others). You never really know until the end of the day. Some people you got to let their wings spread and grow.

WestCoastRydaz.com: Ok.. going back to Dr. Dre.. What did he hook you up with?

Ras Kass: Its going to be on Institutionalized Volume 2. The only thing I got with Doc is he gave me the Pro Tools so I can do the remix to the “Money” record (with Busta Rhymes). I was like “Yo, I want to spit on that shit and do a remix” and he was like “No problem.” So I got the Money remix with ODB (RIP) and Busta on it.

WestCoastRydaz.com: Has he ever approached you about coming to his label?

    Ras Kass: Who? Dre?

    WestCoastRydaz.com: Yeah…

Ras Kass: (laughs)… pauses… No comment on that one.

    WestCoastRydaz.com: (laughs) Awwwww..

Ras Kass: I think definitely Doc has a lot of support for me and he always looks out for me honestly.

WestCoastRydaz.com: That’s good. Its always good to have someone like that backing you up.

Ras Kass: Yeah. I am definitely blessed. He’s a great dude. So is Busta Rhymes. Also Paul Rosenberg and Xzibit. I got a lot of good people and powerful cats on my side that look out for me man and I appreciate it.

WestCoastRydaz.com: What do you think about the West Coast these days? You feelin’ anybody?

Ras Kass: I mean we always grindin’. We got spittas out here that I think really need to be heard. To be honest, I think you guys have been in the forefront of getting it out there internationally and letting people know that. It’s a culture and there are a lot of us. Of course I am going to go with my team Strong Arm Steady & Re-Up family. You got the Green Up’s which is basically BMF. I am a DJ Quik fan til the day I die. You got Bad Azz still grindin’. Of course CI, Crooked I. He’s one of the most under rated from the Coast. People say I am, but he really is to me. Also from C-arson, Bishop Lamont, it’s a lot of good shit coming out.

WestCoastRydaz.com: You are one of the best lyricists period, but how do you think you git in to today’s music world which is dominated by hooks?

Ras Kass: I think its always been like that. Its been hooks and beats. Nas is a great lyricist, as was Tupac and Biggie, but all them niggas made good songs at the end of the day. Jay Z knows how to make a good song. Pick a good beat, put a good hook on it and then…..of course some records you are going to go harder on then others. Like a song to the bitches you ain’t gonna be all super complicated, but if it’s a song on some other shit, you’ll be spittin’ off. Things are the same, it ain’t ever changed. You have to make good records. But there are different kinds of records. You got Club records, Gangsta records, Street shit and records where you are really just spittin’ and lettin’ niggas know.

WestCoastRydaz.com: Are you gonna try to diversify yourself for the radio or clubs?

Ras Kass: I never really try to diversify. I just try to do the things I like. I mean on my first album I had records with Coolio talkin’ about getting pussy, like a record for the bitches. I just do the shit I like. It may or may not sell a million records, but I like doing a lot of different shit. What I try to always tell people is that you can’t always judge an artist by his single. Because of course the single is directed towards the radio or clubs

You got to listen to the album to see what a nigga is really talkin’ about. Now if a nigga got 10 party records on his album its like “c’mon nigga, you killin’ me.” On the flipside if my single got some street shit, you still need to listen to the album cuz there might be some party shit on there.

WestCoastRydaz.com: How is it easier making music now that you don’t have a label getting on your ass for everything?

Ras Kass: I am really just getting to do me and its really more fun. The cool thing about it is the support that I get. Like having Ludacris call me and say “Nigga you sounding like a beast!” Niggas callin’ out to me, reaching out letting me know my shit is hot, like K-Slay and whoever. So that is a blessing. I am not trying to put this album out and realistically sell 10,000,000 copies so the fact that niggas got it and think its bangin’, that’s a blessing in itself. Busta Rhymes got on Power 106 FM and was like “Ras Kass got an album out and that shit is bangin’” He ain’t got to do that, so he obviously must mean it, and I appreciate it.

WestCoastRydaz.com: Going back to the West Coast, why have a lot of our avenues disappeared in the past few years?

Ras Kass: Ice Cube said it best, “I push rhymes like Weight.” So the one thing I advise all West Coast artists is to look at Eminem. He is from Detroit, yet he had to come out to L.A. for Dr. Dre to hear him. Sometimes you have to go get our of your own element and push your rhymes like its dope. When you can’t get your dope off in one area, you go out and look for another to go get it off. So we got to have the same motivations for this rap shit and leave our comfort zones and try to go fuck with other people cuz they just might be able to put you in a cool position. You ain’t got to turn into no other nigga to go out and get love from people that are trying to offer you some love.

WestCoastRydaz.com: Why don’t you let everybody know again when they can see your projects?

Ras Kass: Out now is Institutionalized Vol. 1. Its 19 songs deep. I just got a XL rating from XXL Mgazine which is a blessing because they reviewed it like an album although it was technically just a mixtape.

WestCoastRydaz.com: Elliott Wilson said he is a big supporter of yours.

Ras Kass: Yeah, Elliott Wilson.. shouts out to XXL Magazine. Also the new Source Magazine, they gave it a write up too, so I want to thank them. So all of you fans, support me. Instead of getting a bootleg copy you can go to Amoeba Records Store or a store near you and ask for that Institutionalized! Then look out for Revenge Of The Sith in January. Then much later, Institutionalized Volume 2.

WestCoastRydaz.com: And then after that, who knows what else, huh?

Ras Kass: Hopefully by the end of the year, I can announce that I’ve signed to so-and-so and do it real big.

WestCoastRydaz.com: So you are looking to get signed again despite your last situation with a major label?

Ras Kass: Yeah, there are a few record labels that have expressed concern about signing me. Of course you learn from your past mistakes.

WestCoastRydaz.com: I say that because I remember the last time you spoke out on your former label Priority Records (laughs)

Ras Kass: That I hated labels? Naw, it ain’t like that. But you know that it ain’t going to be perfect with any label. But you know….as an artist you got to have a company that is going to believe in what you do. It became obvious to me that no matter what I did, Priority didn’t believe in me. It was crazy because I would have Dr. Dre saying that he believe in me and that the shit I was doing was hot. Then I would take it back to Priority and it wasn’t good enough. But whenever Dr. Dre would give me a beat, it was like “This is good and that’s good”. I was then like “You are just a Groupie.”

So that became frustrating. If you have a company that doesn’t believe in you, you can’t go anywhere. They will hurt you more than they can help you. When you are in their contract, if you try to go pop off and fuck with other artists and people, they can hold you back from fuckin’ with them, but yet they don’t want you to do nothing else and win.

I am not anti-label. I am just anti-label’s that don’t believe in what I am doing. Don’t sign a nigga when you know what he’s all about and then try to change him up. Jay Z was like that too! He was signed to Priority but didn’t pop off until he started fuckin’ with Russell Simmons. Same thing with Alicia Keys, she was signed elsewhere but didn’t pop off until she went to another label. Now that original label is kicking themselves in the ass! There is always life after a label.

WestCoastRydaz.com: I am glad to hear that there are labels that are hollerin’, because an artist like yourself doesn’t come around that often. When you have a good find, you always keep it.

    Ras Kass: Thank you!

WestCoastRydaz.com: So how would you like to work with that you haven’t worked with already?

Ras Kass: Well, there’s not just one in particular. I mean, take Jay Z for instance. I’ve lived at that nigga’s house before but we’ve never done a song. I’d like to do a song with me, Jay Z, Nas, Rakim, Jadakiss, Eminem, Canibus all in one song and let Dr. Dre and DJ Premiere do the production together (laughs).. That would be some shit to me.

WestCoastRydaz.com: Anybody that you want to shout out?

Ras Kass: My momma (laughs)… All the homies.. The Re-Up family… and really, You all! Lets be real.. Lets keep Rydin’…
