The
trend in Hip-Hop right now is to go solo and change your name. Fredro
Starr of the madface group Onyx is now Firestarr and he's dropping
his solo debut Firestarr.
One thing we notice is the lack of good collaborations on this album
: take Mieva for example who appears on the jewelry anthem "Electric
Ice" ; this untrained MC makes the track even worse.
Firestarr's grimy vocals are still here to remind us of the Onyx days
and songs like "Thug Warz" will assault the listeners just
like "Slam" and "Throw Ya Gunz" did in the early
90s.
If you've read our Rubix review, you know about the track "Imagine
if" , on Firestarr, the track "What if" has also the
same topic, asking questions and trying to find some answers: "What
if Notorious was here?. What if Eminem was black?/What if Jordan never
got Scottie?. What if Milli Vanilli's record never skipped onstage?".
On tracks like "What if " and "Perfect Bitch"
(although the title is rather crude) Fredro Starr shows us another
side of his character, more analytical and pertinent. Although Alchemist
and Ant Banks are among the producers, the instrumentals lack consistency.
Overall, this album is worth copping and Firestarr is still as mad
as he was in Onyx, expect a few disapointing moments though...
